The third day of Sabbatical Campaigns saw the highest voter turnout of the week, according to our polls, following two days of campaigns and a massive turnout to Candidates’ Question Time.
Despite worsening weather and temperatures in the low single digits, the campaign teams were out in force attempting to entice voters. With many students waiting until after hearing all the candidates give speeches at Candidates’ Question Time, ballot boxes across campus were busier than on previous days.
With almost 160 people permitted to campaign in these elections, campus was extremely busy as candidates attempted to take advantage of the previous night’s effects. Candidates’ Question Time filled the Students’ Union main hall, with many of those who were unable to attend streaming the event live from our website. Our live-blog and Twitter (through either @InsanityNews and @theOrbitalBUZZ) was delivering up-to-the-minute text coverage, encouraging many students to vote as a result.
On the same day, theorbital.co.uk broke its record for the most page views, set the previous night at Candidate Question Time, after more than 1,000 people visited the website in a single 24-hour period (0000GMT-1159GMT, 04/02/2010). That total was smashed on day three, after the website notched up 1,400 page views in the following 24 hours, due in part to RHUL’s first ever use of exit polls during SURHUL election season.
