Orbital is the official publication of the Students’ Union of Royal Holloway, University of London (SURHUL). Our 40 page magazine is released every month and distributed to nearly 9000 readers around campus. We aim to provide the students of Royal Holloway with the latest up-to-date campus and local news, both in print and on our website, as well as updating our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
The magazine is comprised of six sections: News, Opinion, Features, Lifestyle, Arts and Sports & Societies. Our student journalists, photographers and designers work together to produce interesting and attractive content that we’re proud to publish each month as a team. We accept articles from any student on campus, but encourage you to join our outlet and enjoy the benefits of our termly ‘Careers in Journalism’ events and weekly training sessions.
It’s easy to get involved, simply sign up as a member of Orbital at www.su.rhul.ac.uk, create an account on our website and get submitting some content! If you would like any further information email our editor at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Why not start building up your journalism portfolio now? Get involved!
I’m Laura, a third year studying Economics, Politics and International Relations. I’ve been involved with Orbital Magazine since my first year and have watched it transform into the slick publication you see today- whilst slowly working my way to the top! What do I want to see this year? Innovative and varied content, more careers and training events and the creation of a great Orbital social scene. Facts about me? I’m an unashamed and avid watcher of Keeping up with the Kardashians, I’m a total health freak with giant collection of kitchen appliances, and finally I don’t really want to be a journalist, it’s just a stepping stone in my ultimate goal of getting famous enough to appear on strictly come dancing.
As a second year studying Modern History and Politics, I do my fair share of writing, though nothing quite as unique as Orbital. I got involved with this magazine pretty much straight away when I started my degree, and have got more and more involved in the last year. Planning has become my biggest obsession, with multiple notebooks, colour coordination and too many coffee meetings. I’ve previously been Deputy Features Editor and Comment Editor, so I have watched Orbital transform into its current state. I want to keep pushing this; get the most out of Royal Holloway’s talented students and create something to be proud of.
I am a second year English and Creative Writing student with an interest in politics and current affairs. My favorite thing about being Deputy News Editor is that I feel like I am being prepared for being a ‘’real’’ journalist. When I’m not writing for The Orbital I am probably either blogging or reading a bad fantasy novel.
My name is Hannah. I’m a third year English and Drama student, and I, like everyone, have opinions on things. Being the Editor of the Opinion section is one way for me to be able to tell the world exactly what it is doing wrong. And you could do this too – exciting right?! So if you feel like ranting/celebrating/putting the world to rights, you should get in touch! P.s. I really love rabbits.
People call me Laura, but I’ll answer to pretty much anything. I’m attempting to finish my third year of History, but I’ve discovered that I am truly talented at procrastination. What you need to know; I like to invent new styles of walking, my first and last attempt at frying a sausage ended in a small fire, and you should write for the Comment section.
I’m currently studying English at the university. As features editor I’m excited to see more of you represented in the magazine next year. Now in this section I think it’s important that we consider a range of issues that might not always make the headlines. A fun fact about myself? You’ll see me on the frisbee pitch!
Hey my name is Buthaina, boo-thay-na (c’mon three syllables you can do it!. I’m a third year, I study PIR and I am an ex-aspiring journalist turned aimless wanderer. I hope to help those societies that are trying to create a buzz on campus and also try to generate as much discussion on controversial topics as possible. I am keen on fashion and will try and feature articles about bloggers as they are now the new models. One of our big Lifestyle aim is to promote delicious and healthy meals on a student budget.
Hey there! I’m the Orbital’s Arts Editor, a musical theatre enthusiast, and now a finalist Psychology student. Article wise, there are few things I enjoy more than snarky and judiciously punned writing. I look forward to bringing together what the arts have to offer a Hollowegian, and to being part of this joyous team!
Though the signs of age old wisdom are creeping on me, my sprightliness and passion for the Arts are as strong today as they were in my now long distant youth! With a rich history in Theatre and Music, the Arts have always played a substantial part in my life.
Hey I’m Sophie and I’m the Deputy Editor of the Sports & Socs section this year! I’m a third year history student who is involved with the Student Activities Committee as well as playing for the Women’s Rugby team. My favourite thing about my role is that I get to showcase all the great in house talent from the various societies and teams to help promote as well as raise awareness about you guys in our section! Something fun? I work at a sweet shop and my milkshakes really DO bring all the boys to the yard!
Hi I’m Laura, the Deputy Editor of the Sports and Societies section! I’m a third year Psychology student and have also just been re-elected as Secretary for Women’s Football this year. Having already been a journalist for the Orbital, I’m excited to be more involved with the magazine and to help promote clubs and societies, getting you the recognition you deserve. Fun facts about me… I’m obsessed with pugs and French bulldogs, my favourite cocktail is a mojito and I can open a bottle of corked wine with just a shoe.
Hey there. I’m a third year Psychology student, Liverpool supporter and falafel addict. I first started doing design for a student publication whilst studying abroad in Canada. I’d really love to see more photographs and illustrations by students decorating the pages of Orbital this year so if you’re interested in contributing then please get in touch with me!
