The SJWs of the World

In the midst of this year’s relentless bid for becoming one of the most disheartening in living memory, it’s safe to say that there is a lot wrong with the world. I don’t need to digress on all the issues, I just need to vent over one particular group of petulant individuals who thrive on these problems facing society; the Social Justice Warrior. The term has been used to describe virtually anyone speaking out in the name of promoting progressive issues that we all have to face at some point in our lives, namely feminism, civil rights, and political correctness. The ideologies behind the movement itself aren’t exactly anything new, we’ve been seeing pressure groups form equally divisive barriers between themselves and the rest of society for decades now; but the whole Social Ju...

What my first year at Royal Holloway has taught me

Connor Deith on his first year at Royal Holloway. It is absolutely inconceivable for me to think that my first year at Royal Holloway is over already, however with this article I intend to revel in the nostalgia in order to express what my first year has taught me. It has been a year I won’t forget, and I hope that, when the time comes, you won’t either. There are several things that my first year taught me, not necessarily out of choice but rather out of circumstance, however not all of them are equally important in my opinion. On the one hand, yes, perhaps staying up all night to write an essay I could've done three weeks ago wasn't such a good plan, but that stuff really isn't important to me. The things that have meaning are the things that revolve around the potential outcomes t...

How companies are becoming exploitative.

Connor Deith investigates the rise of trans-national Corporations. It’s no secret that Apple Inc. has faced its fair share of criticism. From tax dodging to sweatshop labour, there’s very little doubt that Apple’s success as one of the world’s largest companies is due in some part to its ability to deflect such accusations and reign as a technological giant. Some of these problems manifest themselves in countries such as China and Taiwan, due to the extent to which Apple’s influence has impacted on the vast hordes of labourers which goes to show just how devastating the effects a large corporate presence can have. Investigations into the conditions of workers in Chinese factories have recently spawned from the news of the Foxconn suicides. Foxconn, a major manufacturer who have busi...

Chapter: University, Term 1

I still have a vague recollection of what life was like before I came to university, and to summarise it in one word, it would have to be, simply, easier. Now, I’m not trying to portray myself as some overworked, caffeine-riddled genius after one term of university, because let’s face it, no one is. But never before have I had so much to do in so little time. The first three months of my degree completely flew by, and with term two looming upon us all, I feel that now is the opportune moment for some reflection on the weeks gone by. It would be mid-August of 2014 when I received my results, and the first call of university beckoned me. At the time, I knew I wasn’t mentally prepared for such a leap, so I took a year out. Another year vanished, and all my family and a select number of ...
