Changes to the hall support programme

Emma Halahan discusses the changes being made to the hall support programme. On the 16th of May, the college announced that the Residential Support Advisor programme (RSA) would be changed significantly for the 2017/18 year. The new programme, The Hall Life Team, will include 24 Hall Life Assistants and just six Hall Life Duty Officers. Only the six Hall Life Duty Officers will go on call, responding to emergencies and disturbances in halls during out of hours. This is significantly reduced from the previous programme where an RSA for every individual hall would be on call each night, now the six Hall Life Duty Officers will be responsible for the entire campus. UnScene Festival: A Review

The 10 short pieces that made up Drama Socs UnScene Festival certainly packed a punch. Emma Halahan reviews a night of laughter, tears and tender moments. Ranging from spoken word to a brief improvisation by The Holloway Players, the 2016 UnScene Festival had something for everyone. Original writing at RHUL doesn’t have much of a platform: if you are a drama or creative writing student there are opportunities with the Student Workshop and Musical Theatre Society’s Variations offers the opportunity to write an original musical, although it’s first years only. Marrow Society: An Introduction

Emma Halahan finds out more about the latest society to get ratified, Marrow, linked to the bone marrow donation charity, Anthony Nolan. 1) Congrats on getting ratified! Tell us more about your society. RHUL Marrow forms part of a wider cross country student-led network that helps raise awareness of blood and bone disorders effectively saving hundreds of lives year after year. There are 3 main aspects to our work; spreading awareness, fundraising and donor recruitment events where we take spit samples and fill in some paperwork. Nick Perryman talks careers in the financial sector, uncertainty and a post-Brexit Britain

This week is Business and Finance week at Royal Holloway and on the 18th of October, Nick Perryman, Royal Holloway council member and managing director of wealth management at the global financial services firm UBS, came to talk to students regarding Brexit and careers in finance. Nick is soon to be vice chair of Royal Holloway’s council, the governing body that oversees decisions, and opened his talk with a brief history of his 20 year career in finance and banking, talking about his experience in banking despite not having a traditional economics, finance or accounting degree (he graduated in 1997 with a BSc in Psychology).
