Finding Shelter From the Rain

Tiger-Lily With 1 in 5 young people suffering from a mental illness (teenmentalhealth.org) and society divided between those who understand what people are going through and those who do not, the tension continues to rise. Ignoring the need for better education and support around mental health is not the answer. By ignoring the rain it does not mean you don’t get wet, and not everyone has an umbrella to keep them dry. The same goes for mental health. It is time to make sure everyone has an umbrella. Seeking help is a positive step in the right direction, but sometimes this can be difficult to take. Ultimately, the key to making progress is listening to your needs. Your progress may start with something as simple as discussing with someone the support you need or exploring what optio...

With the inevitable increase in online work coming our way as the new, albeit strange, term begins, it’s essential to have some techniques up your sleeve for being productive at home. Sitting down for those online classes or trying to start that first assignment of the year after such a long break is a daunting task, but here I hope to relieve you of some of that dread and help you push past procrastination. By keeping it controlled and finding ways to feel positive, you can become more productive; work won’t pile up and you’ll get back into the swing of things.  Firstly, where to work and when to work? Spilling The Beans

Out of the 124 known coffee species we only use  Arabica and Robusta, yet over 60% of all coffee bean species are endangered. Global Change Biology published researched indicating that 22 are considered vulnerable, 40 are endangered and 13 are critically endangered. Coffee is a plant with very particular preferences and even the slightest imbalance in the growing conditions can and will ruin an entire crop yield. Much like the coffee beans, the suppliers and their respective buyers are very particular. They are looking for coffee beans with exact taste notes when roasted. Therefore it is very difficult for farmers to produce coffee beans of these high standards and consistency in an ever-changing climate.  Many regions of the world maintain coffee plantations. Ethiopia is considered th...

The Twisted 24 days of Christmas

The prospect of getting a piece of chocolate every day just because it’s December was exciting and practically luxury as a kid. So now, entering the adult world is just chocolate enough? Is it childish? The commercial world has said no and our consumer culture ate it up like Christmas pudding.  Turning advent calendars, which used to be about advent, in fact, from chocolate to alternative and even luxury daily surprises is pushing Christmas even further towards consumerism. Thus, enter all of the crazy advent calendars we see in all kinds of stores this Christmas. Chocolate is for children, so instead why not fill it with something else? From 24 days of make-up to naughty gifts (better not tell the parents back home about that one!), we are left wondering what retaile...

Fresh Footprints on the Moon

Following the 50th anniversary of the moon landing a few months past, this historic event remains a key milestone in the history of humanity. In total, six crewed ships granted 12 men the chance to leave their footprints on the moon, the last of these landings taking place in 1972. But many are left with the question: when did the enthusiasm for moon exploration evaporate? Arguably, the main motivator behind the Space Race of the 1960s was the Cold War. Once the US had claimed victory against Russia in the rush to reach space, the moon slowly became a “been there, done that” situation. The mission for humanity to make its mark on the moon was complete. With the moon out of the spotlight, this left NASA without the support needed to keep returning as frequently as it had been. A...
