Varsity 2017 – Stags V Bears

On the 29 March, 30 of Royal Holloway’s sports teams gathered at Surrey Sports Park for their first ever Varsity Cup. They were joined by sports teams from the University of Surrey, and the intense competition between the Bears and the Stags was soon underway. We had some truly deserving wins in many sports, including this year’s Team of the Year: Golf. We also had wins in Women’s Volleyball, Women’s Basketball, Chess, Cheerleading, Men’s Fencing and a draw in Pole Fitness. Although we weren’t able to bring the trophy back to Egham, I think we can all agree that the sports teams performed so well and made our university proud. For many teams, it was an exciting and very successful end to the season. But it wasn’t just our wins that made the day so exciting; there was an amazing atmosphe...

Bears Night: £2000 Raised for Sports and Societies

‘Bears Night’, a fundraising night ran by the SU, was back for the second year running this October, and this time it was bigger than ever before. With 1000 of you through the door on the night, meaning over 1000 bears t-shirts sold and worn, 2016 has started off promising for clubs and societies, where over £2000 was raised through tickets sales to be directly invested back into the numerous sports and societies on campus. Vice-President Sports and Development, Steff Milne said of the event: “This is an amazing thing to have achieved and it’s all down to you guys! We smashed last year in terms of sales of tickets and the general event”. As well as being a key fundraising event, the night acted as a launch for the Royal Holloway Bears branding, which covers sports, fitness and act...

#BearsDay Update- 24 National Bears!

It has been a very tiring but unforgettable weekend for the Volleyball Club. The Men’s 1st and the Women’s 1st travelled to Ashcombe to take part in the preliminary rounds of Volleyball England National Indoor Student Cup. This was an incredible opportunity for our Bears to measure their strength with teams coming from all over the South of England and London, many of which were 1st or Premier Division teams, well above the 2nd Division where our Bears usually play in. On Saturday, our Bears walked into the National Volleyball Centre in Ashcombe School slightly late, but they immediately turned the freezing hall into their cave. The day started in the best way we could have hoped. With remarkable team spirit, resilience and determination our boys took a 2-0 revenge on Chichester 1st, ag...

Women’s Football – Still Walking on Water

Currently undefeated and top of their BUCS league, Women’s Football’s first team faced Portsmouth in the first round of the South Eastern Conference Cup this Bears day, and were keen to maintain their winning streak! There was no question it would be a fast paced game, with right midfielder Alicia Lyne making some impressive runs down the wing, and setting up a beautiful cross for striker Flora Green making it 1-0 to Holloway in the 22nd minute! Krissie Glover set up Portsmouth’s subsequent own goal from an on point corner and went on to assist yet another Holloway goal placed neatly in the back of the net by Michelle Iversen Badiane in the second half! With Portsmouth having lost one of their best players to injury, as well as their keeper, who casually popped her shoulder back into pl...

#BearsDay- Rowing? Paddle-happy winners!

The rowing club, over the last few months, has had a great start to the academic year, and we are all really excited to show our potential at BUCS too. We’ve had a brilliant intake of freshers, and it’s great to see the team spirit continue from last year. We are aiming to maintain the high levels of enthusiasm as well through the frosty winter mornings we all love so much! We have been taking on more opportunities to train, work out and improve our standards. In October the senior squad competed at Cambridge Autumn Head. Both the Men's 8+ IM3 and the Women's 4+ IM3 won their category, whilst the other boats competing on the day (two more women's and one more men's boat) were able to gain very respectable times providing us with a lot of confidence for the rest of the year. Lastly, we ha...

#BearsDay- An update from Swimming

RHUL Swimming is a friendly club that welcomes all competitive and leisure swimmers. As a club we are constantly growing, having increased membership by 40% since last year. Our 1st competition this year happened 2 weeks ago at Surrey Sports Park against Surrey! This was our first intercollegiate competition ever, winning 4/15 races including some fun races! Here is a cheeky race video: https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=384347561722051&pnref=story Last weekend swimming were in Sheffield competing at the BUCS Short Course (25m), and two weekends after that we will be in Norwich at the BUCS Team Champs competition. CIYK last month was a great success with many of the new members initiated! Recently we have acquired two sponsorships with the Monkey’s Forehead and Medicine, ...

Women’s Football – Cancer, we’re coming to get you!

Wednesday 8th October was set to be an eventful day with Women’s Football hosting the return of their annual Charity Tournament in aid of Cancer Research UK; yet no one could have anticipated quite the turnout. With such excitement having built rapidly across the likes of Facebook and Twitter, the club were overwhelmed when met with 90 girls eager to make the most of the weather and test out the new facilities. Holloway’s five teams were joined on the 3G by the likes of Queen Mary’s, RUMS, and Reading Universities, as well as members of Royal Holloway’s Women’s Rugby, who were keen to support such a great cause. The day kicked off with fast paced action across the three seven-a-side pitches, including a hat-trick for Holloway striker Effy Hameed, and some impressive saves from Women’s R...

Basketball Bears

There's a lull of safety to the familiar phrases of parents, teachers, siblings and friends: "your first year will be the best year", "you're going to meet so many different people", "you're going to make friends and memories that will last your lifetime". They seem so certain. After my first year, it is my belief that it is exactly what you make it. Freshers is the only year at University that has as much free time as it does - it is a year designed to allow for the shift, growth and life changing that is moving away from home and starting in a brand new place. My advice, is to do as much as you can. RHUL bears basketball is one of those experiences. Unlike several of the sports teams on campus the basketball squad is composed of only two teams- RHUL Men's Basketball, and RHUL Women...
