Nato’s 70th Anniversary Overshadowed by Tensions

Nato leaders are meeting near London as growing tensions between member states threaten to overshadow the summit marking the alliance's 70th anniversary. The three-hour talks are expected to address ever-growing issues such as cyber-attacks and the strategic challenges posed by China. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been named as the host and is set to remind the members that the commitment to defend one and other is at the heart of the alliance. The tensions began to grow Tuesday on the first day of the milestone summit as tensions began to bubble to the surface. US President Donald Trump and France President Emmanual Macron were already strained amid a dispute over taxes and trade, and there were comments from the French president last month that suggested the US commitment...

Rushdie and ‘the Joker’

On 23 October, the London Literature Festival at the Southbank Centre hosted the novelist Salman Rushdie in conversation with Erica Wagner on his thirteenth novel, The Golden House. Rushdie is a British Indian novelist, well known for his 1981 novel, Midnight’s Children, which won both the Man Booker Prize during its year of publication. One of them is the Trump, and the other is the Joker’, to which the audience broke into ...

Founding Fathers: Hamilton and the American Identity

As many will be aware, and many will not, the hit musical ‘Hamilton’ recently released tickets to its West End show, opening at the Victoria Palace Theatre in November this year. According to the Telegraph, over 100,00 people registered to be notified of the general sale of these tickets. I was lucky enough to get one through the pre-release sales, however as time goes on tickets will undoubtedly become like gold dust. But what is it that has made this show such a global phenomenon? The musical was written by the multi-talented playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda and tells of the life of the lesser known founding father, Alexander Hamilton, predominantly through the medium of rap and show tunes. To many, this might sound like an absolute nightmare, but to others, like myself, it gives a fresh...

A Trumped America

Sahar Mahmood writes about the future of America after the shocking US election results. On the 9th of November the world saw the United States of America elect Donald Trump their 45th president. With a campaign marred with statements of bigotry, sexism, homophobia, Islamophobia, racism and hatred, Trump made his way comfortably to the White House. But what does an America with Trump as president actually look like? Trump has promised amongst many things to deport immigrants and build a wall between Mexico and the United states. The first 100 days in office are extremely significant for any president to cement the public’s faith in their ability to deliver on the promises they have made. So here’s what Trump has vowed to do in his first 100 days in office. Immigration has been a k...
