Varsity: Archery Interview

Are you looking forward to Varsity? Yes, definitely! It’s going to be a great experience no matter the outcome for us. What are you most excited about? I’m really looking forward to being able to join the other clubs in competing against Surrey, feels great to contribute for the first time this year. How have you been preparing for it? I’ve tried my best to fit in as much shooting practice as I can, but as the club’s coach, I like to spend a lot of time helping out club members. Spring Term Preview

Whilst 2017 was an exciting year for RHUL’s sports clubs and societies, 2018 could prove to be even more thrilling. As the spring term usually ends with elections and final events, the next three months will be the busiest time for many clubs. Also, the new year brings new opportunities, as students start trying out new sports. The ‘Give It a Go’ sessions took place at the start of term, ranging from swimming sessions to feminist society meetings. Also taking place in January was the 11th annual Alumni Sports Day, which involved ex-students coming back to compete against current students in a huge variety of sports. Varsity 2017 – Stags V Bears

On the 29 March, 30 of Royal Holloway’s sports teams gathered at Surrey Sports Park for their first ever Varsity Cup. They were joined by sports teams from the University of Surrey, and the intense competition between the Bears and the Stags was soon underway. We had some truly deserving wins in many sports, including this year’s Team of the Year: Golf. We also had wins in Women’s Volleyball, Women’s Basketball, Chess, Cheerleading, Men’s Fencing and a draw in Pole Fitness. Although we weren’t able to bring the trophy back to Egham, I think we can all agree that the sports teams performed so well and made our university proud. Varsity is coming to Royal Holloway!

With the start of the new academic year, exciting news was announced at the SU on Monday 3rd. Over 1000 ‘bears’ attended the SU to hear the announcement from Steph Milne, the Co-President of Sports and Development, that a Varsity between Royal Holloway and the University of Surrey will be occurring on the 29th March 2017. A varsity match is defined as a sporting fixture between two university rivals. The first varsity was between Oxford and Cambridge University in 1827 – Royal Holloway’s inaugural participation means 2017 will be the year students here have the opportunity to join the tradition.
