Do not think you are alone in this competition,
As there is a group of us that empathise,
Attempting to relieve the pressure that pushes
You to prove yourself in your chosen exercise.
There are those of us that know nothing about sports,
But that does not mean we know nothing of community,
So we will still stand at the sidelines,
Cheering you on for every winning opportunity.
We will write the signs with words of wisdom
And paint our faces with the competing colours;
Showing our support in every way possible,
From the indoor fights to the outdoor races.
Or maybe there are some of us that did sports as a child
But now choose to just spectate,
Living vicariously through the sportspeople we see;
A nostalgic envy creating an internal debate.
Yet, we will still be some of your biggest supporters
Because we know exactly what you are feeling
In that moment- nerves from a nightmare,
But an excitement that makes you feel like you’re dreaming.
Similarly, there are your teammates,
The ones that are your friends both on and off the pitch,
Who will celebrate you through your strengths,
But if injury occurred, would without a doubt make the switch.
A certain sportsmanship has sprouted between you,
Connecting you all as one,
To the point that you know everything about each other,
Making it easier to get the game won and done.
Don’t forget to listen to your coaches,
Even in times when their guidance may seem mean:
Just remember that they are always trying to help
And do what is best for the team.
They are the ones that guide you through this experience-
If you fail, the blame feels like it is on them-
They know that if you aren’t training, then your opponent is,
So show up for practice again, and again, and again.
And of course, there is always your family,
The people that we all turn to for support
Because they have been there with you, through every moment,
Watching how you have progressed within your sport.
They are sure to keep a stash of successes,
From participation certificates, to medals that present first place,
But to them, the biggest win is when you spot them in the crowd;
Continuing to compete with a smile on your face.
And so,
Even though it may just be your hand inside the boxing glove,
I hope you feel the supporting hands of your peers:
We are your found family, here to show you nothing but love.
