Great year for fledgling Table Tennis Club!

RHUL Table Tennis has a lot to celebrate on its first birthday! This past twelve months have been nothing short of amazing for the table tennis club! Awards, league wins, cup medals, charity events – you name it, we’ve done it!

After a very positive first Fresher’s Fayre in September, the club has come on leaps and bounds. We entered three teams in the British University and College competition – one men’s and two women’s team.

Our men’s team had a fantastic season! Their only defeat coming on the last round of fixtures after promotion and the league title were secured. Captain and Captain Elect, Alex Reilly and Patrick Hurley had sensational seasons; Patrick’s only defeat coming at the hands of a former international. After a shaky start, the women finished the season strongly (3rd and 5th) with a BUCs Cup runners up medal as well! Lauren Kitchen was outstanding throughout the cup run; her only defeat coming in the final!

At BUCs individuals, our men’s doubles pair of Alex Reilly and Yifei Wang did fantastically well to progress to the second round after winning in the preliminary and first rounds. Overall, the club managed to finish second in BUCs points earned by a club with our Women’s first team making it into the top ten for individual teams! (Sort it out, boys!)

Thanks to Vice President, Kate Haswell, and her outstanding work with Ping! RHUL, the club became the first ever winners of the BeActive Club Contribution of the Year! The club also managed to secure funding for two brand new tables courtesy of the Alumni Fund (insert shout out to Alumni here!).

During second term, we held a charity tournament in the Sports Hall and fundraiser at our fantastic sponsors ‘The Foresters Arms’ (insert shout out number two here for pub Landlord, Ray Morrissey!). We managed to raise over £200 for CLIC Sargent! Thanks again to everyone who took part and donated.

This year has truly been better than any we could have predicted in our wildest dreams and we cannot wait for more of the same next year. Massive congratulations to this year’s Club of the Year (Cheerleading), but we are gunning for you and that trophy come next year’s Colours Ball!
