Royal Holloway has recently been subject to several petitions, created by students attempting to instil the change they’d like to see at the university. In early September, student Phoebe Dormand created a petition that asked for the Health Centre on campus to be improved. She cited 8 issues that she felt warranted the petition, including but not limited to response time, lack of sympathy, being refused appointments and having only 5 doctors and 1 nurse covering over 9000 students. Comments on the petition found that there were many other issues with the Health Centre that Phoebe had not touched on as well as increasing solidarity between the students. Emily Wilding Davison Building Officially Declared Open

On Wednesday 18 October, the Emily Wilding Davison was officially opened by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Chancellor of the University of London, Princess Anne. The building was closed to students between 9am and 4:30pm on that day to allow for the Princess’ tour and speech to be given. The building was worked on for nearly two years, with almost 3000 people working on the construction of the building to get it to what it is today. The library contains more than 400,000 books and over 1000 study spaces for student use. It offers other services, such as the Union Shop, the Santander Bank, the Student Services Centre, the Careers & Employability Centre and the Exhibition Space for interests in art and culture. Founders Building Architect’s Cottage To Be Demolished

The cottage of William Crossland, architect of Royal Holloway’s iconic Founders Building, is set to be demolished in order to make room to build the new library. Opponents of the demolition say that the cottage, which currently houses the Santander branch, and is situated next to the college shop and laundry, is notionally protected by the grade I listing of Founders through ‘curtilage’ protection. Furthermore, the Victorian Society’s conservation advisor, Sarah Caradec, claims that the cottage is “an unusual survival of an architect’s home on site.” Opponents further claim that the College deliberately has left the cottage to deteriorate to justify demolition.
