5 Reasons to Become a Bear

As a fresher, the transition from further to higher education is undoubtedly one of the biggest changes you will undertake. Welcome week will be filled with new faces, freshers and tonnes of freebies, but if there’s one thing I urge you to do, whether you’re sporty or not, it’s to join a club. To many people, joining a sports club may seem even more daunting than starting your first year, so if you’re sitting on the fence or need a little extra motivation, here’s our top five reasons for becoming a Bear: 1. Keep fit! Whilst keeping fit may seem like an obvious reason to participate in sport, you’ll find there’s more to it than that! A club membership is significantly cheaper than joining the gym, and training in both a competitive and a friendly environment can be hugely beneficial w...

Great year for fledgling Table Tennis Club!

RHUL Table Tennis has a lot to celebrate on its first birthday! This past twelve months have been nothing short of amazing for the table tennis club! Awards, league wins, cup medals, charity events - you name it, we’ve done it! After a very positive first Fresher’s Fayre in September, the club has come on leaps and bounds. We entered three teams in the British University and College competition - one men’s and two women’s team. Our men’s team had a fantastic season! Their only defeat coming on the last round of fixtures after promotion and the league title were secured. Captain and Captain Elect, Alex Reilly and Patrick Hurley had sensational seasons; Patrick’s only defeat coming at the hands of a former international. After a shaky start, the women finished the season strongly (3rd ...

Four to Celebrate!

Riding: What a fantastic year it’s been, with both the A and B team enjoying great success this season. Both teams won their home competitions with the A-Team collecting one red team rosette, two yellow team rosettes and numerous individual rosettes from their away competitions. The B-Team also had great success away bringing home team rosettes in every colour and plenty of individual ones too. This included a first place rosette for Team Captain Rachel Walsh in the first competition of the season! This success resulted in Rachel, along with A-Team rider and Social Secretary Melissa Chalk, being awarded half colours. Their excellent and consistent form led the A-Team to become the first known riding team in Royal Holloway history to compete in the Regional Qualifiers. Despite competing ...

An Interview with… MTS & Women’s Rugby!

I'm sat in Founders south quad on a gorgeous summer day. Across from me are Lewis Mullins, Pippa Gentry and Matt Abrams from the Musical Theatre Society. Lewis is the President, Pippa, President-Elect, and Matt has been Musical Director of various productions including Little Shop of Horrors and Summer Cabaret last year. I feel awkward to have propositioned these people that I barely know to interview them about their past achievements of the year. And what achievements they are. Lewis dives straight in with the statistics I suspect he’s quoted many times before. Three productions, and the intensive weekend show with twenty musical numbers. Not always easy to remember, Matt cuts in. Imaginably so. Volunteering has been a massive part of the year, with shows entertaining Melwood Old P...
