A Society Election POV

“Can we have all the candidates for secretary please?” [ITALICS] Is that me? Am I running for secretary or treasurer? Maybe a quick look around to check if anyone else is running…okay, looks like one other person is running so I’d better get up there. Wait…hold the bus! There’s dozens of candidates! Oh, no, they’re just letting someone out. Phew! And it looks like I’m going first. Great. Now let’s just grab my notes…oh, no! Where is my Post-It note?! I swear it was in my pocket! *Breathe sigh of relief* It’s here. I could have sworn that I wrote more. Never mind, everyone’s waiting. Trip up onto the stage equals fabulous start. Why does it have to be so silent when people do speeches? There’s not even annoying elevator music. Right, establish eye contact. With twenty people. Easier said...

Socs Ball Review 2015

This year’s Socs Ball saw the glitz and glam of Holloway’s societies descend upon the Thistle hotel in style. After a classy drinks reception, complete with a jazz quartet and much posing for photos, the main event got under way. Out of the ever successful performing arts societies, Shakespeare Society emerged victorious scooping two awards; the first for most improved society and the second the RAG outstanding contribution award, to honour their incredible read-a-thon, which saw members shivering outside the Windsor building whilst working their way through all 37 of the bards plays in 99 hours. Best new society went to Sustainability Society, who have made a serious impact this year with plans to hopefully bring a bike hire system to Royal Holloway in the near future. The outstanding in...

In Your Socs- Drama Society’s Poetic Charity

On Thursday the 6th of November, the Drama Society provided the opportunity to take part in a Poetry Workshop run by their chosen charity, Safe Ground. Safe Ground works to decrease the stigma faced by families of people in prison, and strives to promote a social change by connecting communities and rehabilitating the prisoners’ relationships with their families through the use of drama, dialogue and debate. The workshop took place at the South Bank University and was run by the writer and performance poet, Dean Atta. I found the workshop particularly engaging because I was familiar with his work. However, Atta made it clear that a keen interest in poetry was not required, as he successfully involved each participant in a captivating three-hour session. All the exercises were conduct...

In Your Socs – BioSoc welcomes Sassy Scientists

BioSoc have had a tremendous start, our Inaugurations being the most memorable! A great turnout and a great night! Sassy scientists working those white lab coats (although they weren’t so white after… Sorry!). Thank you to those who volunteered during our BioMentoring week, your guidance was appreciated. We welcomed a new partnership with TEACH FIRST this term and with their support we will be hosting various events for you to learn more about the organisation. We are also backing ACTION DUCHENNE this year! A charity that raises money towards Duchenne muscular dystrophy research and provides support to those affected. What’s next? A few things we’d really love for you all to get involved in, LOVE IN A BOX, organised by the Community Action team and our BIG charity event this term, “LIGHTS...

In Your Socs- Rocking the Games

The Lyell Geoscience Society hosted our first sports event of the year 'The Rock Games'. The tournament featured games such as football, rounders, handball, touch rugby and tug-of-war, where post-grads and lecturers were up against under-grads. A total of 8 teams attended the event, which was held on Sunday 19th October on Founders Field. Throughout the day cakes were being sold at the Kayleigh Sugar Fund Cake Sale. On top of cake sales, half of the sign-up costs for the teams were donated to the Kayleigh Sugar Fund. A total of £47.50 was raised for charity. The event was a huge success. UCL’s Dr Fabio Crameri presented the second lecture in the Lyell Geoscience Society’s Lecture Series on Thursday 23rd October. The title of his presentation was 'Numerical Modeling of Global Mantle Convec...

In Your Socs – Say a Little Prayer for Gospel

Gospel Choir is a group of roughly forty people who all come together on Monday and Thursday evenings to sing popular, well-known songs with a gospel spin. The first two songs that we learnt this year were “Lean on Me” and “I Say A Little Prayer”. Rehearsals start with a number of warm-ups including breathing techniques (which turn into competitions) and singing short extracts from songs in three to five part harmonies. After this, Katie and Michelle sing the soprano, alto and tenor parts one by one so that we can all learn our parts; then comes the slightly terrifying part where we put all the parts together. Nine times out of ten this goes to plan and sounds incredible; however, when it goes wrong, we all have a laugh about it, go through our parts separately and then try again. We...

Got Soul? Go Gospel!

Royal Holloway Gospel Choir is an eclectic group of students with one great thing in common: a passion for making feel-good music! We are lucky enough to rehearse in Founders Chapel once a week – an amazing space with incredible acoustics. Not only are the songs we learn popular and fun to sing, but also no musical background is required! As a non-auditioning choir everybody is welcome. We encourage everyone to join, and all abilities and beliefs are welcome. Some of our favourite songs last year included Pharrell’s ‘Happy’, ‘Oh Happy Day’ and ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’ by Diana Ross. We can’t wait to start another brilliant and exciting year! The new academic year brings a thirst to improve both musically and socially. Ultimately, we want to spread the love through music. Have you...

An Introduction to Femsoc

Interested in feminism? Or simply finding out more about what exactly that means? The definition of feminism is ‘advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality’; we aim to work towards equality of the genders. As one of the first UK universities to accept women, Royal Holloway has a rich feminist history which we try to keep alive through our society. We meet weekly for friendly discussion with likeminded people, usually followed by a social. In the second week of term we will be holding an open session to give a feeling for the society before you pay membership, so don’t believe the ‘man-hating’ stereotype, come and meet us for yourself! We invite in a variety of speakers and hold charity and campaign events as well as a great mixture of soc...
