Royal Holloway dazzles with ‘A Night at the Theatre’!

Orbital's Georgia Beith reviews the first showing of 'A Night at the Theatre'. A tremendous night of music, dancing and above all fun, ‘A Night at the Theatre’ showcases the very best of what Royal Holloway’s creative arts societies have to offer. In the two part variety extravaganza there is quite literally something for everyone. From burlesque to Shakespeare, horror films to gospel and Tamil, the huge array of talent on display makes it a little hard to believe that most acts were put together in a matter of weeks. Highlights include the uproariously funny ten-minute piece by the Holloway Players which is entirely improvised, the Ballroom and Latin Dancesport’s tribute to the King of Pop himself; Michael Jackson, and the absolutely stunning performances by the three soloists throu...

Bears Night: £2000 Raised for Sports and Societies

‘Bears Night’, a fundraising night ran by the SU, was back for the second year running this October, and this time it was bigger than ever before. With 1000 of you through the door on the night, meaning over 1000 bears t-shirts sold and worn, 2016 has started off promising for clubs and societies, where over £2000 was raised through tickets sales to be directly invested back into the numerous sports and societies on campus. Vice-President Sports and Development, Steff Milne said of the event: “This is an amazing thing to have achieved and it’s all down to you guys! We smashed last year in terms of sales of tickets and the general event”. As well as being a key fundraising event, the night acted as a launch for the Royal Holloway Bears branding, which covers sports, fitness and act...

The Christian Union present the Mark Drama

"It's about 80% shouting and 20% crying" was one reaction to the Mark Drama, a 90 minute exploration of the gospel of Mark by the Christian Union. Perhaps this is an exaggeration, but this comment expresses how immersive the experience is. The show is in-the-round, with three aisles and action going on all around the audience, as well as in the centre of the circle. You are truly part of the performance and it's hard not to join in at points. The cast interact with you and address you, as if you were truly there. And so it is that you experience what the book of Mark has to say. Being run by the Christian Union it is about Jesus, but not aggressively so. Not every character believes what he has to say, and even those that do show their doubts and changes in opinion. The acting is ...

Christian Union plans annual Events Week for February

After a term, or more, at Royal Holloway it is very likely that you will have come across the Christian Union, and if you haven’t then you are sure to bump into them during their events week coming up in February. Voted Best Dressed at Come in Your Socs, the CU are more commonly found in the smoking area every Friday night, armed with doughnuts, water and a friendly face to help you when the SU gets a little bit much, or you just fancy a chat. Meeting every Thursday at 7:30 in MX034, everyone is welcome, whether you are a Christian, of a different faith or have no faith at all – and there are always plenty of free snacks! The CU’s purpose is to reach out to the university community and provide an opportunity for everyone on campus to hear about Christianity and the gospel and ask que...

It’s Okay to Be Selfish and Say No

After previously studying for a year at another university, and then completing my first year at Royal Holloway - I have had to learn the hard way that you need to look out for yourself. By this I don’t mean force yourself to be horrible to people. I’m simply suggesting, the times when you really know you can’t afford to deal with other people’s problems, choose not to! Many of us will stress over things like course work and money troubles, but you don’t have to put more on your plate when it’s full with everyone else’s problems. Even now, I still feel awful when I’m deliberately not replying to a message from a friend who may be going through anything from a break up to an existential crisis. But the truth is, this then means I can get on with that essay that was due without rushing to d...

10 things to know about being a RHUL Fresher

Welcome Fresher's! Fresher's Week can be a bit of a minefield, so I've asked some second years for any sage advice they have on it. With this inspiring wisdom, I have compiled a handy checklist of tips about RoHo to help you navigate these tricky waters: 1. 'Ruby Wines' in Englefield Green is your new favourite shop - make sure to stock up on cheap drink BEFORE realising at 9pm on the first night that you have none. 2. Don't be too shy to go to society socials straight away, take the plunge! 3. Buy the SU Fresher's Week wristband! It may be insanely expensive, but nobody wants to watch their friends queue jump while at the back of an unending line. FOMO aside, you won't have to worry about booking tickets for events online. Plus, there's literally nowhere else to go in Egham on...

Why join a society?

Royal Holloway has dozens of societies, ranging from the usual, such as History, to the not so usual, Humans vs. Zombies, and now is the perfect time to join up! If you’re struggling to decide whether or not to join a society, we've come up with 5 reasons why it would be a fabulous idea. 1. A CHANCE TO TRY SOMETHING NEW Have you always wanted to complete a D of E Expedition? Do you sing Carmen in the shower? Joining a society is a fantastic opportunity to try something entirely new that you may not have had the chance to do before. Royal Holloway boasts over 80 societies with everything from Computing to Tolkien, so there is something for everyone to try. 2. MEET NEW PEOPLE Coming to university can be daunting and it can be difficult to make new friends. Outside your flat and you...

Debating Society

Royal Holloway’s Debating Society is a society that provides a space where people can learn the art of debating and public speaking. As well as having a friendly and supportive atmosphere and ethos, they also compete against other universities in both national and international debating competitions. This year, the Royal Holloway home competition was attended by around thirty teams from universities across the country, including Warwick, Cambridge and Oxford. Team Royal Holloway competed and had an enjoyable, educational day. Royal Holloway hope to enter more teams into such competitions next year. Since the debating society is relatively small, the newly elected Co-President, Oliver Kynaston-de Guyer’s, is aiming to expand the membership. During freshers week, the society is looking to ...

More than books

Starting university, as we’ve all come to know, can be overwhelming – but choosing a society to join is as exciting as it is daunting. Sadly, for a uni that boasts over 50 societies, it was sadly lacking in a society for English Literature. No more! Regardless of your area of study, English Literature is a bridge, or a door, or an interdimensional portal (metaphor) to many a time, place, society or fantasy (fact). It has brilliant opportunities for those who join; whether you enjoy writing, performing or simply reading, our goal is to organise socials and events that will introduce you to the wealth of literary culture that the world has to offer. Our committee is made of colourful characters from the Vice-President “The Hand” Daniel Trigg, who plots to overthrow the President “Genio...
