AI on the Radar

Ever since its inception, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has not only been at the forefront of technological advancement but also a major theme within many action films. What many films of the last decade have told us is that AI will either stage a hostile takeover of the world, or send us into obsolescence by one day replacing us, thus taking over the world regardless. For any journalist, current or aspiring, that day may be today, as it was announced earlier this year that Google is funding an AI program that will create news stories for publications. Google manages a fund, the Digital News Initiative (DNI), that awards grants to digital journalism projects around Europe. They awarded a grant of over £600,000 to Ireland’s Press Association and Urbs Media for their collaboration on the R...

Technology – friend or foe?

It has been a busy few months, exams are still fresh in everyone’s minds and in the big scary world, outside the walls of Royal Holloway, an election has taken place. But when surrounded by all the big things, sometimes it’s easier to forget the little things, like that phone that’s probably in your pocket right now, or maybe on the table in front of you. Now you might be wondering why I have suddenly switched to talking about phones; what’s that got to do with anything? Having a phone might not seem important when you’ve probably had one for a while and using it is just second nature. What neither you or I might not think about is how much the technology used to build your phone, and thus the phone itself, has advanced in the last few years. An iPhone 6 is 32,600x faster in terms of...

That Deus Ex Machina Life

It’s a tragedy that I can’t recall a time without my phone in my hand, my laptop by my side and the answers to any question a simple googling away, and it’s a sense shared. While technology and knowledge has been the cause for human advancement through the ages, it seems now it’s a way to decelerate and hold us still. As a 90s baby I still recall VCRs, 248mb CDs, AOL dial up is drilled into my subconscious, when it was rare to even have a Nokia phone because they were expensive. Yet now it seems that every broke student has the latest smartphone (not to mention the indignity of eight year olds carting around an iPhone like they actually use it) and if it’s not our phone, we’re watching videos on someone else’s, wondering if getting a tablet is even worth it, face planting ourselves in fro...

How to run away

Hunted, on Channel 4, is a reality show turned documentary, on the extreme difficulties of going ‘off grid’. The plot is that 14 everyday people have to go on the run for a month, while a group of highly professional hunters try to track them down. The hunters compromise of ex police officers, secret intelligent officers and even the dreamy David Blakely (once married to model Jodie Kidd). From watching the show, there are a number of things I’ve learnt on how to remain off the grid (if I ever became a most wanted fugitive, which I highly doubt will ever happen!) Don’t use public transport. Every time you use this there will be CCTV: if there is CCTV you can be tracked from anywhere in the world. Other forms of transport which have been proved successful are cycling and hitch hiking, o...
