Royal Holloway Men’s Football Charity Campaign

On the pitch, Royal Holloway Men's Football team excel in supporting one another- however, this year they've extended this support to off the pitch, with their ongoing charity work in support of 'Mind' and 'Movember'. I spoke to Jack Colman, Vice President of the club, below is what he had to say about their fundraising mission:  Royal Holloway Men’s Football is a family. It comes with fun, incredible memories, and at times hardships and struggles. Our year-long fundraising and charity campaign focuses on men’s mental health, particularly targeting and supporting the well-known charity ‘Mind’. Our reasoning behind choosing mental health as our charitable campaign is that several of our members in their lifetime have either gone through, or are currently going through, stress or menta...

‘This Girl Can’, and she will!

Take your mind back to 2015, before university was even a thought for you freshers, and think whether you can remember the ‘This Girl Can’ campaign. It was a national campaign set up by Sport England, that encouraged both girls and women to celebrate being active. At some point in their lives, I feel like every girl can relate in that they’ve felt the fear of judgement and lacked confidence in taking part in sport. Research has shown that there is a mix of practical and emotional pressures that stop many women from being as active as they would like, with over 40% aged 16 and over, not getting enough exercise to healthily benefit them. This is something the ‘This Girl Can’ campaign aimed to tackle. However, we’re now nearing the end of 2018 and the newest movement to launch is the ‘Fit G...

It’s Time to Find Your ‘Thing’

The Freshers Festival blues have arrived (as well as the flu) and you’re setting your alarm for your 9am tomorrow morning. Doesn’t seem much fun, right? However, it would be better knowing that after your lecture, you have a Travel society social or a Lacrosse game. Becoming a member of a society or a sports team is one of THE best ways to make the most out of your journey here at Royal Holloway. Here’s why you should join a club or society: Happiness Levels: As much as university can be jam-packed with things to do, sometimes it is normal to feel lonely. Your mental health can be hugely impacted by this new wave of independence. Being part of a society or playing in a sports team is something that can contribute greatly to your happiness levels. By playing a sport or being in an environm...

An interview with LINKS First Aid

First Aid is one of the most useful skills you can learn: teaching you how to treat small-scale injuries, such as cuts and sprains, to dealing with life threatening situations. I asked the president of the society, Alex Mullen, to answer a few questions regarding his experience as a member of LINKS. How would you pitch your society to potential new members? We are a First Aid Society; with strong, foundational links to St John Ambulance. It is the goal of the charity and therefore our goal to ensure that nobody suffers from a lack of trained first aiders. Everyone has been in the classic 'caring for a drunk friend' situation, but would you know what to do if they fell and hit their head, or became unresponsive and stopped breathing? We teach loads of useful first aid skills, and al...

Interview with Marshea Makosa, President of Comedy Society

How did you first get involved with Comedy Society? I got involved after performing at the Monkey’s Forehead (now The Packhorse) as a solo act and the then president, Ned Sanders, was in the crowd and invited me to come along, check out a workshop and maybe perform with the society. I went and it was a very chill way to challenge and compound my comedic tastes. You’ve just returned from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which the society attends annually, how was the experience? The fringe is really fun! It’s a whirlwind of flyering, talking to performers from all around the world, performing and working on your craft in real time, improving with your fellow comics, going to shows (and going to bars) and just feeling engaged with the mystery of the ‘comedy circuit’. It's intense and ...

Interview with: AbHarm

What does a day-in-the-life of an Absolute Harmony member look like?  So on a typical Monday we’ll have a rehearsal with our main choir and Hardcore Harmony together; this always starts the week off on a high note!’  (Pardon the pun!). The choir is genuinely so close that friends are always made. At rehearsal, the choir learns an amazing arrangement which one of our two brilliant Musical Directors will have arranged! As you walk in, the song selected for the arrangement will be playing and you automatically feel the buzz of excitement! Rehearsals always start together as a whole choir with our fun warm-ups. After, each vocal part goes off into different sections and rehearse their part with their teacher (someone selected from the choir). Once we’ve learnt our individual parts, we all c...

Get to know RHUL’s Fashion Society

What did your society achieve last year? We grew! Last year we had the highest amount of Fashion Soc members ever seen. We had a lot of very participative and talented individuals in our group which allowed us to do more exciting activities and participate in very fun projects. One of them was ANATT, last year we organised a fashion show for this society joint event. It was themed “The Red Trend Catwalk” and it featured many of our members who participated as models, makeup artists, stylists, hairdresser, performance coordinator, photographer, event assistant and event manager. Additionally, we care about the career side of fashion and we like to help and inform students who want to get into the industry about the opportunities and the way the fashion industry works in the real world...

A Chat With Cheer

Cheerleading is a sport that is often associated with American High Schools, PomPoms and the 'Mean Girls' type Popularity. In order to break that stereotype and reveal the truth about what it takes to be a cheerleader, I spoke to Becca Stewart, President of Cheerleading at Royal Holloway and gained insight into what the sport really entails. It is no doubt that cheerleading is one of the fiercest sports on campus, but fierce often gets confused with bitchy. What would you say to any freshers wanting to try out that might feel a little intimidated by the sport’s reputation? I want to assure all freshers that being a part of our club is like joining a family. Whilst we are fierce and fiery on the mat, as soon as we come off we are straight back to being so supportive and friendly, alwa...

Get the scoop on RHUL Pole Fitness Society.

How long has your society been running? We’ve been going for two and a half years now! What are you most excited for in your society this year? For sure it’s introducing new people to the sport! We’ll also be having a lot more performance opportunities, we’re in ANATT for the first time and will be having two showcases! Is your society suitable for beginners? Of course! Anyone can try pole or hoop! There’s a misconception that it’s too hard or too much arm work, but that couldn’t be more wrong. You’ll get stronger from doing it, but you’ll be fine no matter your size or strength. There's a bit of controversy around this topic: do you consider pole fitness a feminist activity? Yes, in the way that it involves completely changing other people’s opinions about what pole i...

A Talk With Men’s Football

Men's Football is one of the largest clubs on campus and one of the biggest sports in the world. With the World Cup just finishing and England doing so well, I spoke to Royal Holloway's President of Men's Football, Remy Henry, to see what he had to say about the sport that is so close to all of our hearts. As someone who has played on the 1st team for two years, what aspired you to want to take it to the next level and run for President? My passion for Football is one of the main reasons why I decided to run for President. This ties into wanting to run for Men's Football to ensure that all of the members can benefit from being a part of the club, as well as ensuring that Men's Football is a club that is welcoming to everyone. You joined the 1st team as a fresher and will finish yo...
