In Your Socs – BioSoc welcomes Sassy Scientists

BioSoc have had a tremendous start, our Inaugurations being the most memorable! A great turnout and a great night! Sassy scientists working those white lab coats (although they weren’t so white after… Sorry!). Thank you to those who volunteered during our BioMentoring week, your guidance was appreciated. We welcomed a new partnership with TEACH FIRST this term and with their support we will be hosting various events for you to learn more about the organisation. We are also backing ACTION DUCHENNE this year! A charity that raises money towards Duchenne muscular dystrophy research and provides support to those affected. What’s next? A few things we’d really love for you all to get involved in, LOVE IN A BOX, organised by the Community Action team and our BIG charity event this term, “LIGHTS...

In Your Socs- Rocking the Games

The Lyell Geoscience Society hosted our first sports event of the year 'The Rock Games'. The tournament featured games such as football, rounders, handball, touch rugby and tug-of-war, where post-grads and lecturers were up against under-grads. A total of 8 teams attended the event, which was held on Sunday 19th October on Founders Field. Throughout the day cakes were being sold at the Kayleigh Sugar Fund Cake Sale. On top of cake sales, half of the sign-up costs for the teams were donated to the Kayleigh Sugar Fund. A total of £47.50 was raised for charity. The event was a huge success. UCL’s Dr Fabio Crameri presented the second lecture in the Lyell Geoscience Society’s Lecture Series on Thursday 23rd October. The title of his presentation was 'Numerical Modeling of Global Mantle Convec...

In Your Socs – Say a Little Prayer for Gospel

Gospel Choir is a group of roughly forty people who all come together on Monday and Thursday evenings to sing popular, well-known songs with a gospel spin. The first two songs that we learnt this year were “Lean on Me” and “I Say A Little Prayer”. Rehearsals start with a number of warm-ups including breathing techniques (which turn into competitions) and singing short extracts from songs in three to five part harmonies. After this, Katie and Michelle sing the soprano, alto and tenor parts one by one so that we can all learn our parts; then comes the slightly terrifying part where we put all the parts together. Nine times out of ten this goes to plan and sounds incredible; however, when it goes wrong, we all have a laugh about it, go through our parts separately and then try again. We...

Spotlight On: Bhangra Society

Now in its second year, the Bhangra Society at Royal Holloway is forever growing and achieving new commendations. Having won a competition with RBS at the end of last year, receiving a prize of £250 and being invited to perform at an event run by the bank, the society is looking forward to moving forward from this and entering further competitions. So what is Bhangra? Bhangra is a folk dance that originates from the Punjab and it is steeped in tradition. This includes the clothing and music associated with Bhangra and has led to the development of a culture that goes beyond the dancing. The celebratory nature of this dancing style has resulted in it being very popular at weddings and parties. This festivity is encouraged by the society at their classes and social events. Classes run ...

#BearsDay- Triumph for Men’s Football VI: IMPERIAL 5’s 1-2 RHUL

The lads of Royal Holloway football club's fourth team returned to campus with all three points, winning by two goals to one against Imperial fives. It was a game won thanks to organisation and communication across the pitch. The score line does not reflect the stream of chances that were carelessly squandered. Eventually on the stroke of half time a thirty-yard screamer from Geri Soni flew beyond the reach of Imperial’s to go into the break one up. It was to Holloway's disadvantage that the referee had a particular, and perhaps irrational, distaste for high feet which resulted in the conceding of a free kick on the edge of the box.The set piece was converted to make things level. At one a piece Holloway were reminded that it only requires one incident for the game to be turned on it...

In Your Socs: Enactus UK Training Weekend 2014

The annual Grantham Training Weekend was once again back in full swing on the 7th-9th of November. Enactus UK unites all 51 university teams together during these hardworking but thrilling three days, which represent the highlight of the Enactus Calendar. The Royal Holloway team has seen their expectations generously fulfilled by the numerous team building, networking and training activities offered. Jay, an Enactus RHUL project leader, attended the leadership workshop, which was tailored to her role and responsibilities. In accordance with her own interests, this session also provided her with inspirations, best practice tips and innovative ideas, which will allow her to develop her project further for the year ahead. Holly, Crystal, Kasia and Vladimir, who freshly joined the Enactu...

Andy Murray: The Next Step

‘If I were his coach, I would definitely take a break – he needs a break”. This was the view of John McEnroe after Andy’s catastrophic loss at the hands of Roger Federer. In the final tournament before the ATP tennis curtain draws its blinds, Andy Murray needed to win in two sets to advance into the knockout phase. Instead, the 17-time Grand Slam Champion from Switzerland taught the Brit a lesson, handing the man from Dunblane a 6-0 6-1 thrashing. Murray was made to pack his bags and trudge out of a shocked 02 Arena crowd and into the cold London night. This match represented an inordinately spaced gap between a man who has won this tournament twice, also being ranked two in the world; and a man that had to win three titles, in as many weeks, just to qualify. Murray look beleaguered, Fe...

#BearsDay Update: Curse of the final minute for Men’s Football 2s

On this year’s 5th of November #BearsDay the fireworks started early as the Men’s Football 2nd team faced University of Surrey 3rd on Nobles. A goal fest ended in another massive blow to morale in the dying seconds of the game: 4-4. After four weeks of football, it is safe to say that this season is characterised by goals, goals, and more goals, with 7 goals scored per game on average. We went into the game on a high after a great performance against Medway 2 (4-1). Surrey had won all of its previous games, but within 15 minutes we were 2-0 up. Antoine scored his 3rd and 4th goal of the season after quick breaks and inch perfect assists. Surrey then got a goal back before half time, due to poor defending on a free kick. A header cam off the post and left our goalie Harrison Elliott powe...

Have Your Say Day: What You Thought.

“Improved? Oh no I love the SU!” Slavyana               Katie and Lily are two very friendly people I met in Tommy’s Bar. To them, the SU is a “friendly place”, with “always stuff going on”. They seemed very much in the know about the “cheap” nights out on campus, but also that the SU is a “great place to go for help”. Not just sticky floors then.               Syed is another guy in Tommy’s, this time claiming his free chips for having his say. When I asked him to sum up the SU in a word he was very obliging. “Effective”. Short and sweet.               Nathalie is a girl with something to say. Outsid...
