Clubs & Societies reminded to adhere to NUS Alcohol Awareness Policy

Royal Holloway’s recently revised Alcohol Awareness Policy has been causing controversy at the beginning of the new academic year amongst societies and clubs on campus. The Orbital has been informed that a certain society , not affliated with the Students’ Union, has been called in to speak to the College, to remind them that committees need to ensure society-led events encourage sensible consumption of alcohol. College have stated that they will take disciplinary action against students who misuse alcohol on College premises or encourage or pressurise others to do so. Make Sure You’re Registered

In February of this year, only a third of students were registered to vote. Prospects were bleak for the 2015 General Election, especially as the student population in some areas is big enough to swing the vote and get people into power who will not break promises and who will acknowledge the demands of students. However, since February there's been a massive increase in students registered to vote. New data from the NUS shows that now almost three quarters of students are registered, with 72% of those surveyed likely or highly likely to vote in the next election. Though some students may be doubtful of whether or not their vote will make a difference, the NUS believes that many seats could change parties as a result of students going out to vote. The Royal Holloway Symphony Orchestra kicked off the new term in September with a concert that filled the Windsor Auditorium beyond its own doors. #BearsDay- A Great Start for Volleyball

Great start of the season for both the Men’s and Women’s teams, who won their home matches. The Men’s team defeated Middlesex in Egham Leisure Centre with a secure 3-1. Despite the gloomy and depressing location, the boys started the game imposing a solid rhythm on the opposition and took the lead winning the first two sets with a good margin. During the third set, the team’s concentration went down, and due to far too many mistakes the opposition won the set 25-23. However, in the fourth and last set, the team went back on the court feeling determined to close the game. Thanks to new energy and a powerful and constant service, the boys won with a satisfactory margin of seven points. #BearsDay- RHUL Hockey Wolfpack Vs Imperial Medics 5’s

After several months of lone, predatory hunting in the wilderness of Surrey, the Wolfpack finally regrouped to participate in what they do best: Play some mediocre-yet-passable hockey. The summer hadn’t been good on the pack after many of the groups matriarchs had left for pastures new, more specifically actual careers, but many of the new pups quickly came up to the pace of the sport. Unfortunately, the match quickly deteriorated with the two’s struggling to have a serious spell in possession. It was clear that a summer of drinking and inactivity had not had the best effect on the team: by the end of the first half, we were undeservedly 2-0 down, particularly because our goalkeeper had only two hours experience in that position and because of a fumbled and scrappy ball over the line. #BearsDay- Disappointment for Women’s 1st Fencing

After narrowly missing promotion to the Premier League last year, the start of the new season saw the Women's 1st Fencing team put our brand new pistes into action. This week's opponents were new to our league; having risen through the ranks of South Eastern 2A, the Kings College London team earned promotion, and it showed. Our first weapon of the match was foil, with ex-Captain and resident foilist, Lyndsay Galpin, new blood, Chloe Hooper, and current Captain Verity Ridgeon, who having switched to Sabre hasn't picked up a foil in 11 years. The KCL girls started strong with a 15-1 lead, but after the third bout we started to warm up. Police Investigating Sexual Assault outside Medicine

Reported in the early hours of the morning during fresher’s week, Surrey Police are investigating a case of sexual assault outside of the Royal Holloway venue Medicine. According to the Police, on the 26th of September, a woman in her 20s left the club and was reportedly approached by two men. The woman, who was taking a phone call at the time, had her phone taken from her by one of the men, who then ended the call. The second man then took hold of the woman by her wrist and attempted to push her into a nearby car. The woman went to get out of the car but found the door locked. She asked for it to be unlocked and was then able to leave. #BearsDay- ‘The Bears steam out of the cage’

Royal Holloways’ Men’s 1st Hockey team produced a clean and clinical performance on October 15th, dismantling new boys Chichester 3-0 in a huge first game of the season. Game One: three points. Despite their being no earlier stage found than this one and even though it may not define champions or label relegation battlers, it was a gritty performance that already bore extreme significance. New to the League 4A experience, a lot has been expected of the boys that hold the highest hockey helm at the College. Royal Holloway places highly in World University Rankings

Royal Holloway has placed at 17th in the UK and now sits at 118th in the world according to the Times Higher Education World University rankings. The College once again had an impressive performance in the ‘international outlook’ category, ranking at number one in the UK, and sixth in the world. The College Principal, Paul Layzell, issued a statement to the university website commenting that ‘The excellent and distinctive position of Royal Holloway in this year's world rankings is a testament to our excellent staff and the diversity and impact of our students.’ However, the results do highlight a dip in performance for the university, in comparison to its 2013-14 performance; the College dropped 5 places from 12th in the UK. College Expansion Plans Deferred by Council

Royal Holloway’s plan to expand the university buildings by 2031, to cater for a forecasted increase in students, has been opposed by Runnymede Borough Council during a meeting with Councillors. The plans, which would see the University look to buy further property in Englefield Green to transform into new halls of residence, and to create improved access points to campus, were deferred mainly on grounds that the College had not planned to provide enough parking space for the predicted increase in students. The ‘Masterplan’, originally submitted in January, has already been forced into a period of revision following meetings with the council as a proposed new accommodation block on Noble’s Field, which is currently used for sports, did not adhere with ‘greenbelt’ requirements.
