Roadwork Chaos on Egham Hill

Road works on Egham Hill are proving problematic, causing congestion and making access into the university difficult. The works are situated on the A30 Egham Hill junction with St Jude’s Road, the crossroads heading into Englefield Green, an area heavily populated by students. Traffic can be seen queuing on a daily basis from the entrance to Virginia Water right up to set of traffic lights where the road works begin. The work is only in to its third phase and is due to stop at the end of May before the Magna Carta anniversary celebrations in June. Follow-up work is then expected to be carried out afterwards which will then only increase the congestion causing utmost inconvenience for student, pedestrians, residents, and drivers alike. Men’s Lacrosse Season Review

Previously in BUCS lacrosse leagues, the quality of a team has been based on the amount of US based or experienced players that the team has. Royal Holloway lacrosse team gained no experienced or overseas players this year and the only recruits were players who had barely heard of the sport, let alone picked up a stick. The future looked challenging for a team that had never won a piece of silverware. The entire team knew it would be an uphill battle especially with larger universities who had more players to choose from. The team began training hard each week with American coaches Brendan McCann and Jordan Boreman. Beginning their season with a win over Surrey was crucial and from there the team grew in confidence. Socs Ball Review 2015

This year’s Socs Ball saw the glitz and glam of Holloway’s societies descend upon the Thistle hotel in style. After a classy drinks reception, complete with a jazz quartet and much posing for photos, the main event got under way. Out of the ever successful performing arts societies, Shakespeare Society emerged victorious scooping two awards; the first for most improved society and the second the RAG outstanding contribution award, to honour their incredible read-a-thon, which saw members shivering outside the Windsor building whilst working their way through all 37 of the bards plays in 99 hours. A disappointingly overcast morning last Friday turned into a beautiful sunny day, perfect for the next aspect in Royal Holloway’s #votebecause campaign. Kim Deasy, the Press and Communications Officer, explained that they hope that the campaign will encourage students to register and use their right to vote in the upcoming general election. Today’s task was to spell the word vote using staff and students with an aerial photo, a creative and visually exciting way to involve lots of people in the campaign and raise awareness. Family of Missing Royal Holloway Student Fear Escape to Syria

The family of a missing Royal Holloway student Zubair Nur, have alerted Scotland Yard, fearing he may be en route to Syria, after the College contacted them to report he had not attended lectures since January of this year. Nur, who started at Royal Holloway in September studying Petroleum Geology, is suspected to have flown to Turkey in an attempt to then cross the border into Syria to join ISIS extremists. In the weeks before his disappearance friends of the first year student became increasingly concerned after he began sharing posts on social media praising extremist leaders and ideology. Gender Neutral Toilets to be Trialled on Campus

Following their hugely successful LGBT+ history month in February, Royal Holloway’s LGBT+ Society have achieved another impressive goal in securing a pilot with the College which will see the creation of gender neutral toilets on campus. The College agreed last week to trial two sets of single stall toilets on campus to gender neutral toilets, these can be found on the fourth level of the Bourne Building and the ground floor of the International Building. The changes will then be reviewed in July, and providing there are no issues, all single stall toilets will then be changed to gender neutral toilets. Possible Cases of Drink Spiking Reported at SU

Recently, there have been reports of incidents of drink spiking at the university’s Student Union, and whilst it is believed these cases are a rare occurrence, the union has taken steps to raise awareness of the issue. Speaking to Sidonie, Vice President of Education and Welfare, we were told the SU are keen to highlight the importance of not victim blaming and have produced posters that offer an un-gendered reminder to be cautious. Sid emphasised the need to acknowledge that it is not just women that are the victims of drink spiking. Drink spiking is often associated with illegal acts such as rape and theft. Heating Nightmare for Kingswood Students

For more than 45 days Kingswood residents suffered from a loss of heating and hot water resulting from an unexpected breakdown in the boilers that serve the accommodation. The breakdown occured on the 24th of December, luckily the majority of students had already left for the Christmas holiday. However, the students who remained, many of whom are international, spending Christmas away from their families, described the incident as a ‘shocking’ and ‘frustrating’ thing to happen. Throughout the Christmas break, the remaining students had to put on their thick clothes to protect from the cold weather. Founder’s building of Royal Holloway is beautiful. Its majesty excites the fortunate onlooker. This building is of the rare breed of sights that exceeds the aesthetics of its respective Google Image results. The students that scurry around its many levels of incalculable beauty bring it to life, such as oxygen does to the lungs, you can feel Founder’s breathing its history. Fire in Sushi Factory Leaves Students Floundering

Students at Royal Holloway may have been left wondering where their sushi fix had gone, towards the end of last term. The sushi supplier for Royal Holloway had, in-fact, exploded in the early hours of December 1st 2014. The major fire closed Staines town centre, after the blaze broke out in several industrial units, including that of Royal Holloway’s sushi supplier: Tanpopo Japanese Food, at Unit L4 on the estate. Homes were evacuated and about 100 firefighters tackled the blaze at the Renshaw Industrial Estate. Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said the fire, which broke out shortly after midnight, was thought to be due to propane cylinders exploding.
