Royal Holloway, University of London?

As I’m sure you’ve guessed by now, you aren’t in London. However it’s much faster, easier and more impressive to nod along when family, friends and strangers assume that you are. Either that, or tell them that you live next door to the Queen in Windsor. Even though we aren’t in London, we are only a stone’s throw away. A short walk to Egham train station, hop on a train to Waterloo, and you’ll find yourself in the capital in under 40 minutes. A word of warning; the 20 minute walk to Egham train station may sound like a doddle now, but as you become accustomed to student life that walk seems increasingly too far! Nevertheless, some of you will use this opportunity to explore London, and it’s something that I strongly encourage. If this is your first real exploration of London, I’ve pu...

To all that like the fine things in life

Whether you are Italian or not, if you're an enthusiast of Italian culture, welcome to the Italian Society! Not only do we host several culture-related socials like Pizza & Cine Nights, Aperitivos, Karaoke Nights (with Italian songs!) and Italian dinners in local restaurants, we will also be going to Italy to experience the beauty of Italian culture, and ‘live’ in Florence! We also have something for those passionate about sports: once again we will host the Inter-Society Football Cup where you can show off your skills in front of all the language societies. And anyone interested in the language will not miss out either! We offer language classes on several levels, so everybody who wishes to solidify their language skills or wants to start from scratch, will definitely find a ...

Geology Rocks

The Lyell Geoscience Society works in conjunction with the Geology department and has a well-established tradition of organising events throughout the year, the most important of which is Lyell Day. This is an annual celebration of distinguished geologist, Charles Lyell, taking place in the spring. Lyell Day is marked by a series of lectures given by RHUL Earth Science lecturers and invited guest speakers, who are experts in their field. It's an opportunity for the department and distinguished lecturers to present their latest research to the Earth Science students at Royal Holloway. Lyell day culminates with a formal dinner held in the prestigious Picture Gallery, inviting guests such as Lord Lyell. We run an annual Lecture Series that invites guest lecturers from around the UK to p...

‘You don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone’ – or do you?

The old classic: “you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone” is thrown around a lot. It’s one of those bittersweet feelings in life, where retrospection is simultaneously your best friend and your worst nightmare. With my time at Holloway now drawing to a close on the eve of my last exam (why I’m writing an article and not revising God only knows), my thoughts are populated more than I’d like by this notion. This is hardly a new thought for me though, especially as I spend the majority of my time wrapped up in a process of overthinking that would make Hawking proud. Yet at this point of life, for the first time I also feel like I have the clarity to look back into the past and into the future too. I mean after all the purpose of University is to prepare us for life, as a psychology...
