It’s ok to not be ok.

It has been estimated that during any one year, 23% of adults experience a mental health disorder, and students are no exception. In fact, statistics suggest that the problem is even more severe within a University setting. All the more concerning is the finding that 26% of students who claim they are experiencing mental health problems, do not get treatment. The overwhelmingly obvious conclusion reached is that something needs to be done. As a psychology student, I have listened to many a lecture dedicated to explaining the topical mental health issues within modern society. Despite the course, which focuses on this area, being entitled ‘abnormal psychology’, week after week, across a variety of different disorders, the same message is hammered home – that these problems are not uncomm...

Blue Dungarees

He stripped off her blue dungarees, Pushed her up against the nearest wall. This wasn't what we agreed, she said, But he shut her up with a smack, a fall. He kissed; he licked and gasped for air, Then after 97 creaks of the bed, he left. Door locked, light out, pain in her chest Wet hair. Scratching at the chamber walls Toothache and sore neck, red lips. Tapping on the big brown door, Rationing her water in the smallest sips. The raven on her window sill seemed to scream, As if he was the prisoner and not she, The bird relentlessly watched her dream. She wished she could fly away and just be. Her lips were cracked and so dry There was no more water in the well For this poor, tired girl to sob, to cry. Not even the salty sea could feed The embryo hanging by a thin st...

An Audience with Example

Royal Holloway’s very own Elliot Gleave revisited our campus this October to talk music, careers, inspiration, advice and of course, a cheeky Nandos. O: How does it feel to be back? E: It’s nice, I’ve only been back four times in 12 years, I came back once to show my wife the grounds, she’d seen pictures of the building. It is an amazing campus. I came back a few years after I graduated to see the new buildings… I went to live in Australia after I left. It was amazing to see, and back again today with the Media students and Music students and it’s so nice to be able to talk to both of them and offer advice to both of them, as I’ve worked in both industries. O: How do you cope with relinquishing control over your music videos? E: When I first started I was just put with people, ...

A Practical Guide to Interrail

An article recently published by another media outlet, which I won't name, attracted considerable attention when it stated that a trip Interrailing wasn’t complete unless you had something stolen from you. Whilst the article might have had some useful information, don’t believe the headline for a moment. (more…)

‘Pole to Paris’: the 15,000km journey for climate change

Meet 'Pole to Paris': the team running and cycling 15,000km to talk about climate change. ‘Pole to Paris’ is a public awareness campaign that revolves around the travels of a group of environmental scientists from the Polar Regions to Paris; together they will cover 15,000km either running or by bike. Along the way the team stop in various locations to give talks about global warming and the scientific research that has been carried out to analyse the Earth’s increasing temperature, all to increase understanding of the ways in which our planet is currently being affected, ahead of COP21 (the conference scheduled in Paris regarding climate change). When the Earth is Shaken to her Utmost Convulsion

The Orbital's Hira Tahseen speaks out on her experience as a victim of one of Pakistan's earthquakes. It was 8:50am on a Saturday morning, the 8th of October, 2005 in Pakistan when I got woken up by the sound of the bedroom door shaking as if someone was trying to break in. Just as I was about to get up to see who that might be, my mother came running from the other room, crying that it is an earthquake. Then it was us on the bed, terrified, holding on to each other tightly and saying our last prayers. An earthquake of 7.6 magnitude shook Pakistan, which although, lasted for seconds, seemed like forever for those who felt it. Yes, we should have ran to a safer place than just sitting on the bed, but at the time we could not think of anything. The Northern areas of Pakistan were affected...

It’s Okay to Be Selfish and Say No

After previously studying for a year at another university, and then completing my first year at Royal Holloway - I have had to learn the hard way that you need to look out for yourself. By this I don’t mean force yourself to be horrible to people. I’m simply suggesting, the times when you really know you can’t afford to deal with other people’s problems, choose not to! Many of us will stress over things like course work and money troubles, but you don’t have to put more on your plate when it’s full with everyone else’s problems. Even now, I still feel awful when I’m deliberately not replying to a message from a friend who may be going through anything from a break up to an existential crisis. But the truth is, this then means I can get on with that essay that was due without rushing to d...

Is Your Room the Window to Your Soul?

As room inspectors' voices echo through the corridors of campus accommodation, many of us scramble around in an attempt to make our domains ‘respectable’. The ineptly placed clothing and paperwork seen in some student’s rooms, seemed to trigger an unhappy response in some Housekeepers. Bedrooms are such a personal space, with no two the same - they are truly an insight into an individual’s characteristics. It is common belief that a cluttered desk is inhabited by a creative individual; whereas clear and organized typically represents the logical thinkers. It is hard for an ‘outsider’ to understand the mechanics of someone else’s bedroom. Many individuals have reasons for why they order objects in a particular way and often don’t even realise it. Organised chaos There is some form of o...

How my photos ended up on a ‘sugardaddy’ site

Many of us upload selfies of photos of things we have done to social media so we can share with our friends, family, and other virtual acquaintances. Internet search engines have clocked onto the popularity of images and allow us to search images across the web just like we search key words. Websites like www.imageraider.com and www.tineye.com allow us to conduct reverse image images. Conducting reverse image searches is useful and advisable. Why? Because if you have ever been a victim of identity theft you will want to know who has stolen your pictures and impersonating you elsewhere on the world wide web. I did this recently and found a picture of myself: someone was pimping me out as a sugar daddy! I am not the first nor will I be the last to have a selfie stolen and misused. A numbe...
