Paris Under Attack

At around 9:50 (GMT) last night, in an act of hatred that rocked the world, at least 128 people were brutally murdered and a further 180 were injured in a series of bombings and gunfire attacks in central Paris. Explosions were reported throughout central Paris – the most densely populated areas to be targeted were near the Stade de France where the French football team were playing Germany, and the Bataclan concert hall where there was a sold out concert of US rock group, Eagles of Death Metal. It has been reported that there was a hostage situation in the Bataclan where 87 were killed, and there were an unknown number killed at the stadium. This horrific violence comes less than a year after Islamic extremist gunmen murdered 18 people in an attack on the Charlie Hebdo offices, and on...

A day in the life of a turtle

A day in the life of a turtle: A trip to Costa Rica to save the Turtles On Sunday 26th July my friend Jo and I set off on our journey to Costa Rica. A long journey awaited us. An hour and a half drive to London Heathrow. An eight-hour flight to Miami, followed by a change to a three hour flight into San Jose. Our programme trip was entitled ‘Surf and Turtle Conservation’ so the main aim of our trip was to save some turtles. However, prior to reaching the camp we would be staying in for the next couple of weeks, we had a couple of days residing in a youth hostel in the town of Alajuela just off of Costa Rica’s capital city. The environment was amazing as it was full of the energy of so many young travellers wanting to go out and experience new cultures. As my Dad says, “when you feel gra...

Puppy Therapy

Monday morning moods- we all get them. However, on the 26th of October a huge number of Royal Holloway students had a sudden burst of energy, converting their Monday morning traipsing to lectures, into a brisk power walk heading in the direction of the SU. In the name of what? Puppy therapy sessions! There were four pooches present: two Labradors, a Cocker Spaniel and a Bearded Collie; who were all moved from Rialto to the SU hall due to popular demand. It was quite comforting to be able to cuddle and just generally be in the presence of dogs. I stayed with Barney (black Labrador) the longest as he reminded me of my dog, it really brought a ‘home’ status to Royal Holloway. He rolled over to have his tummy scratched and gently put his paw in my hand.Dogs don’t ask formed questions or jud...

10 things to know about being a RHUL Fresher

Welcome Fresher's! Fresher's Week can be a bit of a minefield, so I've asked some second years for any sage advice they have on it. With this inspiring wisdom, I have compiled a handy checklist of tips about RoHo to help you navigate these tricky waters: 1. 'Ruby Wines' in Englefield Green is your new favourite shop - make sure to stock up on cheap drink BEFORE realising at 9pm on the first night that you have none. 2. Don't be too shy to go to society socials straight away, take the plunge! 3. Buy the SU Fresher's Week wristband! It may be insanely expensive, but nobody wants to watch their friends queue jump while at the back of an unending line. FOMO aside, you won't have to worry about booking tickets for events online. Plus, there's literally nowhere else to go in Egham on...

Five Things I Regret Not Doing in First Year

My first year at university was an incredible experience and I enjoyed every day of it. However looking back, there’s a few things I wish I had done that could have really benefited me. Hopefully this article will encourage freshers to not make the same mistakes. 1. Join as many societies as possible - I only joined a few societies and I didn’t even commit to them as much as I should have. They are a great way to meet people who have similar interests to you or the best start to trying something new, plus you get to socialise with people outside of your course and meet others from different backgrounds. Some people are put off as they think all societies are sports or music related, but if that’s not your thing there is a big variety such as Anime, Humans vs. Zombies, Photography, Shake...

10 different type of people you will meet during Freshers’ Week

What’s Fresher’s week all about I hear you cry? Well in short they'll be lots of drinking, offbeat dancing and microwave meals (or questionable concoctions someone will try to pass off as a meal) as well as, more eerily, the continued annual resurfacing of certain types of students. There's the one who can't hold his drink, the one who's early to lectures and the one who is the flat mother. Each and every year they are recast as if there is a continual re-run of Fresh Meat. So without further or due It's time to do your best David Attenborough impersonation and take a measured look at the 10 types of student you'll come across this fresher’s week. 1. Yourself You do things you would never do at home - eating out of date Pot Noodle is optional. Prepare to look back in a year’s time and...

Who said you need to go on holiday to have fun?

We’ve all had that moment when we realise that everyone will be having the time of their life in Barcelona, Saint-Tropez or even Los Angeles for the summer and we won’t be. Sometimes money is tight. Sometimes money is as tight as our jeans are as we’ve spent way too much on Domino’s. However, not going on holiday isn’t the end of the world. Being at a university so close to London means that we can enjoy various fun events and experiences there instead. Here are a few things to do in London at a very reasonable (or sometimes non-existent) price. Enjoy free activities at the beautiful Canary Wharf During this summer there will be: Fashion weekend (29th - 31st May); dance performances (29th June - 4th July); outdoor Ping pong (7th –16th August); screens showing sport events in the park...
