10 Things to Do After Exams

Ten Things To Do After Exams So exam season is finally over, and after all that worrying, revising and at times, sheer terror, you’ll probably have a lot of time on your hands. Sounds great, doesn’t it? However, you may find that there’s simply too much time and boredom may strike. To avoid that scenario, here are a list of the top ten things to do after exams, to give yourself that well deserved break and also put your time to use. 1. Go out Number one priority is definitely to go out and let off some steam. You officially have zero responsibilities and trust me, the ‘I’m a student’ excuse is enough at this point of term. Whether it’s a boozy night out on the town or a dinner date with some friends, make sure you relax and properly enjoy yourself. You’ve earned it! 2. Get your s...

The Promise Of Summer

‘Shall I compare thee to a summers day?’ How could I possibly when you are the personification of summer and more. You evoke such an intense cocktail of cascading emotion; the feeling of being free and wild and calm and stupid and wise and reckless all at once. With each step you take the sun's rays burn a little stronger, as the corners of your mouth lift, even just slightly, the birds sing a little louder. And the blossoms on the trees dance with the breeze that carries your laughter. I smile at you and I hold my tongue; all I can do is listen.  You paint a picture with your words of a world not seen before, finding light and beauty in every crevice of this life. The rose lenses you slip before your eyes seem attached permanently, not the intrusion of drugs, alcohol or fear can remov...

“The real value of a real education…nothing to do with grades or degrees”: Thoughts From a Graduating Student

Warning: deep and meaningful content. I finished my degree three weeks ago with an awful sense of failure and underachievement; I was too exhausted to put 100% into my work and I knew it wasn’t up to scratch; I was full of regrets for not doing that internship or this extra-curricular activity: I felt like I had wasted my time. So I went back to the man who was the source of my dissertation: David Foster Wallace, my hero (for anyone who googles him, please don’t judge me). In his address to graduates, he says: “The real value of a real education, which has nothing to do with grades or degrees and everything to do with simple awareness…You get to consciously decide what has meaning and what doesn’t.” This might seem heavy, but what Wallace says is actually kinda comforting. I realised ...

The Real Value of High School Friends

Lets face the facts: you are now in uni. New location, sometimes new country, new courses, and most importantly: new faces. With this leap to sudden independence from all things relating to home it’s easy to sometimes forget about the past, the familiar. High school now seems like a distant memory, something related to the past. However there is one thing that will always surpass this life transition: true friendships. Realistically speaking high school friendships tend to slowly die away, who you used to call your ‘bff’ now leads an estranged life, a casual ‘happy birthday’ and a ‘miss you’ thrown in when an appropriate amount of time passes from the last time you spoke to each other. Some say this is a natural process, I disagree. Because when you meet people who make you happy you shou...

Hello Summer Holiday

As students, saving up and budgeting can prove to be very difficult. This can result in us having a pessimistic outlook on going on holiday. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel as there are places to go this summer which keep our bank accounts happy. One of which is Lisbon, Portugal and here are some suggestions and recommendations for places to go to. 1. Flight and Hotel for 2 There are many deals for holiday packages to Lisbon which can be found on Travel Supermarket. One of my favourite is a trip from 20th July to 24th July which includes return flights and hotel for 2 at the price of £140 per person. This is also at The VIP Executive Santa Iria Hotel Lisbon which is rated 4*. 2. Food The beautiful Portuguese food is a must if you are visiting, even if you are on a b...

10 Things Not To Do Before Your Exams

Exams can be an extremely stressful time, as we all know. However sometimes we don't make the best decisions during this time. Here are a few things you shouldn't do before your exams: 1. Do not develop an addiction to a new show on Netflix. Trust me it never ends well. 2. Do not forget to guilt trip your parents in order to avoid doing chores. "Mum, the most important exam of my life is in two days, and you want me to do the washing up?!" (Something like that should work) 3. Do not believe everything your friends say. They may be smart, but your lecturer is smarter. If in doubt ask them first. 4. Do not get drunk the night before. Exams are painful enough without the horrible hangover. 5. Do not forget to treat yourself. This is a stressful time people. Buy yourself food an...

Cultural and Interfaith Calendar

The Cultural and Interfaith calendar shows some important events across 2015 and 2016. Many events are celebrated here at Royal Holloway due to our multi-cultural and diverse campus. We have decided to highlight a few so that students are aware of their meanings and dates. Last term, the Holi festival was very successful and saw many students celebrating with the powdered paint! There are many events throughout the year and this calendar highlights a few of those. To over two billion Muslims, Eid al-Fitr, also known as The Feast of Breaking the Fast, is an important celebration to announce the ending of the fasting, Ramadan, but also to thank Allah for the strength he has given them throughout Ramadan. They start celebrating by sighting the crescent moon after sunset on the last day of ...

General Election 2015: Local Candidates

Voter turnout in the UK has been on the decline for years, and young people in particular have gained a bad reputation for not engaging with or even caring about politics. Here at RHUL some students simply don’t fit the stereotype. You may or may not be aware that we have a selection of students standing as candidates in the local elections, and societies that passionately care about politics. We caught up with a few to get their views on the main talking points for the upcoming election.   Robert Ashley King: Labour Party Candidate (Egham Hythe) -What is your stance on tuition fees? Our party is committed to reducing tuition fees to 6000. We know other parties tend to promise lots and nev...

Not sure who to vote for? Here are the party policies

Not sure who to vote for? Confused about what all the politicians are saying? We took the party manifestos / policies and broke them down party-by-party, issue-by-issue.  With some (hopefully) helpful infographics too.  (These policies were correct at the time of writing)
