Advice For People in their Second Year

Rhiannon offers 9 simple pieces of advice for second year student. If you’re at the supermarket and ask yourself "Do we need more toilet paper?" The answer is always yes. You can never have too much toilet paper. If you have one housemate or five, you will inevitably be annoyed at them, and that’s fine. Just don’t spend your entire year passive-aggressively dropping hints about how annoying they are. Learn how to make a shopping list and stick to it. Don’t get sucked in by all the deals in the confectionery section (trust me, I’ve been there.) Try and make at least one good friend in each of your lectures and seminars. Not only will you feel less awkward entering a room, but having somebody to lend you notes is an invaluable source if you have to miss a class. Set up a rem...

Exploring Egham on a budget

You don't need lots of money to enjoy the local area, writes Beth Carr Returning to Egham after Christmas you may be short of money and searching for things to do, especially when most activities are getting more and more expensive. However, if you know where to look, Egham and the surrounding area is full of places to explore and spend quality time with friends, or take the opportunity to spend some time alone. Virginia Water Lake Take a short stroll down the A30 and be transported to the grounds of Hogwarts with amazing views at every turn. Virginia Water Lake is the perfect place to picnic with friends or challenge yourself to get fit by walking the 4.5 mile circuit of the lake. Turn left out of the main entrance in front of Founders and cross the road and within 15 minutes you...
Northerner venturing South

Northerner venturing South

I’ve always been slightly paranoid about my origins and I know I'm not the only Northerner who feels this way. I was born in Chesterfield and moved up to Liverpool when I was four. When I decided to move down South for university, or, to be precise, 222.7 miles down South according to Google Maps, it was safe to say that my extremely Northern grandma was more than slightly concerned. My parents encouraged me to go where I wanted, and had no qualms about it. Their only warning was that I would have to get the train home to visit them each time I wanted to. My grandma, on the other hand, asked me several times if I wanted to change my mind about the costs of the train fare, the general cost of life ‘down there’ (she meant London, no matter how many times I told her Royal Holloway was in S...
A Hot Christmas

A Hot Christmas

Beth  Gooding shares what it is like to have a hot Christmas. The time is finally here, the run up to Christmas has begun. We will now spend the next few weeks hoping and praying for snow on Christmas Day to bring that extra bit of magic to our holiday. Whether it snows or not, we will spend the entire day moaning how cold we are and probably doing anything to avoid going outside. The day will likely  consist of many Christmas movies being shown on TV, maybe even watching the Queen’s Speech, filling our stomachs with endless pigs in blankets and numerous other foods whilst huddled in pyjamas or jumpers for the day. But would we ever swap this freezing British Christmas day for one in the Philippines where the temperature can reach 30 degrees? Or maybe Dubai where it is on average 21 de...

Let’s Travel (on that student budget)

Alis shows us it is possible to travel with a student budget. It’s that time of year again - the excitement of being back at university has worn off, the weather is miserable, deadlines are looming, and all you really want to do is pop down to Heathrow and jet off to some far flung island. Of course, this isn’t exactly a possibility. Even when summer does roll around, it’s pretty much impossible to travel on a student budget these days. Right? Wrong. Just last year, I discovered an amazing way to travel, enhance my CV and pick up some language skills, all on a student budget. I wanted to share my experience to inspire other students to get out there and explore the world. It all started when I discovered the website worldpackers.com - a website which allows you to find hostels who wi...

Victoria’s Secret Shaming

Hefina Everard discusses the tabloid's persisent body shaming of the Victoria's Secret Angels   From New York City to Paris, the Victoria’s Secret Angels descend onto the runway for the annual Fashion Show on November 30th; the musicians performing with the angels in the City of Light are Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga and last year’s performer, The Weeknd. This year’s squad includes the likes of Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Lily Aldridge, Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid and newcomer Bella Hadid- all of which are busily in preparation to showcase the newest collection. Controversially, former model Cara Delevingne has been recently shamed by tabloid newspaper ‘The Sun’ over her body image. Cara walked both the 2012 and 2013 shows but was surprisingly absent in the 2014 show despite w...

Afternoon Delight, anyone?

Elizabeth Rosenberg discusses a method that will relieve all of your stress.   When you tell someone you’re stressed, here’s what your housemate/family/the internet will tell you to do: go for a walk, meditate, eat a pizza, change your perspective, have a cuppa (or a pint), do some yoga, learn better coping strategies. Being in my third year, I have tried most of these and let me tell you – you won’t want to exercise, instead you will want to wallow in your bed; the pizza will make you feel bloated so you’ll feel fat and stressed; the “learn better coping strategies” plan (albeit completely correct) isn’t really a short term fix. Luckily, I’ve come up with a stress relief tactic that works nearly 100% of the time and means 1. You won’t have to leave your bedroom. 2. It makes ...

Pret-a-Veggie meets Ready-to-Eat-Anything-Liz

Unfortunately Pret-a-Manger's pop-up Veggie cafe in Soho is not called 'Pret-a-Veggie' but is instead simply entitled 'Veggie Pret'. Personally I think "ready to Veggie" sounds pretty quirky and but oh well, life goes on. Veggie Pret opened in June as a one month idea that probably wouldn't last and three months later it is 1. Still open and 2. Looking to open more Veggie's Prets across London and ~beyond.~   During Freshers I decided to check it out as I think that Pret can do no wrong... I was right. Not only is the cafe gloriously spacious with light flooding in from two walls that are made from glass but the soft wood that the tables, checkout and stools are made from means you enter cooing "ooooh this is nice." Main event - the food. THE FOOD. Crazy amounts of sandwich...

Makeup Shaming is NOT Cute

Makeup Shaming is NOT cute. Makeup Shaming is exactly what it says on the tin, and it is not okay. More and more frequently, women (and men) are being criticised for the style of makeup they choose to wear, based on the assumption that to do so they must be insecure in their own skin or seeking attention from others. Even Simon Cowell is guilty of it. But why should we be judged for the products we chose to put on our own faces? The Ancient Sumerians are thought to have been the first to invent makeup by crushing gemstones and applying them to their eyes and lips. Fast forward five thousand years and the cosmetics industry is bigger than ever. Products have been created for every part of the face, and even the body, in every colour imaginable. Makeup Artists are in high demand and...

Pump-s-kin care

Pumpkins are beneficial not only for your health but also for your appearance. This gourd-like squash is rich in alpha-hydroxy acids, which help to moisturize skin, gently dissolve dead skin cells, treat acne, and helps to tighten those pores. It is also full of vitamins A and C, which are both essential to protecting skin and keeping your skin youthful. So it’s time to ditch the toxic lotions and creams and embrace the wonders of this natural (cheap) moisturizer. Pumpkin facial mask what to do: • Roast half a pumpkin for about 30 to 45 minutes • Scoop out the mushy substance • Mix the mushy goodness with one whipped egg ...
