In Your Socs – Say a Little Prayer for Gospel

Gospel Choir is a group of roughly forty people who all come together on Monday and Thursday evenings to sing popular, well-known songs with a gospel spin. The first two songs that we learnt this year were “Lean on Me” and “I Say A Little Prayer”. Rehearsals start with a number of warm-ups including breathing techniques (which turn into competitions) and singing short extracts from songs in three to five part harmonies. After this, Katie and Michelle sing the soprano, alto and tenor parts one by one so that we can all learn our parts; then comes the slightly terrifying part where we put all the parts together. Nine times out of ten this goes to plan and sounds incredible; however, when it goes wrong, we all have a laugh about it, go through our parts separately and then try again. We...

#BearsDay- An update from Swimming

RHUL Swimming is a friendly club that welcomes all competitive and leisure swimmers. As a club we are constantly growing, having increased membership by 40% since last year. Our 1st competition this year happened 2 weeks ago at Surrey Sports Park against Surrey! This was our first intercollegiate competition ever, winning 4/15 races including some fun races! #BearsDay- Triumph for Men’s Football VI: IMPERIAL 5’s 1-2 RHUL

The lads of Royal Holloway football club's fourth team returned to campus with all three points, winning by two goals to one against Imperial fives. It was a game won thanks to organisation and communication across the pitch. The score line does not reflect the stream of chances that were carelessly squandered. Eventually on the stroke of half time a thirty-yard screamer from Geri Soni flew beyond the reach of Imperial’s to go into the break one up. It was to Holloway's disadvantage that the referee had a particular, and perhaps irrational, distaste for high feet which resulted in the conceding of a free kick on the edge of the box.The set piece was converted to make things level. Clubs & Societies reminded to adhere to NUS Alcohol Awareness Policy

Royal Holloway’s recently revised Alcohol Awareness Policy has been causing controversy at the beginning of the new academic year amongst societies and clubs on campus. The Orbital has been informed that a certain society , not affliated with the Students’ Union, has been called in to speak to the College, to remind them that committees need to ensure society-led events encourage sensible consumption of alcohol. College have stated that they will take disciplinary action against students who misuse alcohol on College premises or encourage or pressurise others to do so. The Royal Holloway Symphony Orchestra kicked off the new term in September with a concert that filled the Windsor Auditorium beyond its own doors. People squeezed into every last head space, perspiring in the heat, to get a glimpse of the Orchestra in its first event of the year, under the baton of RHUL’s new Fellow in Music Performance; BBC Proms 2014 accredited conductor, Rebecca Miller. With an audience pushing maximum capacity and an orchestra to match, swelling with fresh enthusiasm and pushing its own size limits, the year’s musical calendar began with a show of great skill that we are accustomed to seeing year-in-year out; only with a difference! #BearsDay- A Great Start for Volleyball

Great start of the season for both the Men’s and Women’s teams, who won their home matches. The Men’s team defeated Middlesex in Egham Leisure Centre with a secure 3-1. Despite the gloomy and depressing location, the boys started the game imposing a solid rhythm on the opposition and took the lead winning the first two sets with a good margin. During the third set, the team’s concentration went down, and due to far too many mistakes the opposition won the set 25-23. However, in the fourth and last set, the team went back on the court feeling determined to close the game. #BearsDay- Disappointment for Women’s 1st Fencing

After narrowly missing promotion to the Premier League last year, the start of the new season saw the Women's 1st Fencing team put our brand new pistes into action. This week's opponents were new to our league; having risen through the ranks of South Eastern 2A, the Kings College London team earned promotion, and it showed. Our first weapon of the match was foil, with ex-Captain and resident foilist, Lyndsay Galpin, new blood, Chloe Hooper, and current Captain Verity Ridgeon, who having switched to Sabre hasn't picked up a foil in 11 years. The KCL girls started strong with a 15-1 lead, but after the third bout we started to warm up. #BearsDay- ‘The Bears steam out of the cage’

Royal Holloways’ Men’s 1st Hockey team produced a clean and clinical performance on October 15th, dismantling new boys Chichester 3-0 in a huge first game of the season. Game One: three points. Despite their being no earlier stage found than this one and even though it may not define champions or label relegation battlers, it was a gritty performance that already bore extreme significance. New to the League 4A experience, a lot has been expected of the boys that hold the highest hockey helm at the College. #BearsDay- Fencing to Victory

"Come home with your shield or upon it" tweeted President Mike Smith at the Men's first fencing team on the first #BearsDay of the year. If we had shields, we would have returned with them, in style. The match saw our Men's 1st team play the Sussex 2nds team, resulting in what I'd call a pretty impressive start to the year. We started out with Epée, featuring myself, President Mike Smith, and our STARS fresher Elliot Grover. There was a flurry of blades and 50 minutes later we had secured a 45-23 lead- a rare score in a Epée, as a weapon regarded as very balanced in scoring. We can owe our lead in part to the fact that I was particularly on form and only conceded 4 points, which we can't expect every match. Relieved to be a Returner

Are you a returner, suddenly faced with the realisation that you most definitely are no longer a Fresher? Are you filled with horror at the fact that you are quickly growing up, and soon need to become a ‘proper’ adult? Do you find yourself repeatedly telling first years to ‘make the most of it’? Trust me, I know how you feel. As a third year (scary!) I began this term feeling jealous, envious and even hateful towards the new students, who get the excitement of beginning university. “Why can’t that be me?!” I found myself crying (in my head, of course).
