Reuniting Through Poetry

The Royal Holloway English PEN society hosted a poetry and speaking event on the 2nd of December that aimed to highlight the differences and similarities between the Eastern and Western worlds. According to the English PEN society, the event was about “breaking down the East/West divide, through poetry and spoken word”. The event saw several students, one staff member and two outsider poets speaking about dual nationality and their positions in both the Western and Eastern worlds.  Victoria Bulley and Antosh Wojcik, the two outsider poets, as well as Jazz Kaur, Modupe Reis, Prudence Chamberlain and Dr. Eley Williams all dazzled the audience with their insightful observations regarding the “East/West divide” and their own experiences of it, emphasising the notion of free speech that is ensh...

Marrow Society: An Introduction

Emma Halahan finds out more about the latest society to get ratified, Marrow, linked to the bone marrow donation charity, Anthony Nolan. 1) Congrats on getting ratified! Tell us more about your society. RHUL Marrow forms part of a wider cross country student-led network that helps raise awareness of blood and bone disorders effectively saving hundreds of lives year after year. There are 3 main aspects to our work; spreading awareness, fundraising and donor recruitment events where we take spit samples and fill in some paperwork. We will also be holding training events for those of you who are interested in joining us as volunteers. One of the striking things about Marrow is how unified this organisation is and as president I love seeing and meeting people who share this zest for l...

MTS showcases talent with Summer Cabaret

With its annual show, MTS kicks off the post-exam term of Pimm’s drinking in Founders quad with their ‘Summer Cabaret’. Orbital sends its resident photographer Jessie Beach-Thomas to investigate the action and interviews Violaine Brunelin, a member of the production team. Jessie’s take: ‘Colourful, glittery- everything you would expect from a musical!’ From watching Summer Cabaret, a show directed by Max Harris and presented by both Pippa Gentry and Matthew Siveter, I was very impressed. It is clear to see why so many of MTS’s shows have been sold out throughout the year. MTS take pride in their inclusivity, with both auditioned roles and full cast numbers that do not require any auditioning. If you aren’t into the performing side of things, there is plenty of opportunity for students to...

Savoy Opera Society Celebrates 50 Years

It's been an exciting year for the Savoy Opera Society who are celebrating their 50th birthday and have now taken on the title of the oldest society on campus. I sat down with members, Katie Dale and Will Davidson to find out just what it is about the society that has made it so popular all these years. Katie: Opera can be a scary word, but we're more than just that. Will: We're a really friendly and open community, a family. Our society is made up of people studying a range of degrees; we even had a member of staff perform in Pirates of Penzance. They describe the past struggles the society faced in securing its future, and give credit to an influx of first year members in making a massive impact on the success it has seen this year. Will: We've taken big leaps and strides this ...

Shakespeare-A-Thon

The Shakespeare society kicked off the first week of February with the Shakespeare-A-Thon. Stationed outside the Windsor building, they braved the biting cold to bring the Bard to campus farers. The Shakespeare-A-Thon follows on the tails of the society’s 5th Anniversary show which took place on January 25th. I spoke to Dan Jones, President of Shakespeare society, to share the motivation behind the Shakespeare-A-Thon and the 5th Anniversary Show. ‘Last year the RHUL Shakespeare Society were fortunate enough to win Best RAG Event at the Societies Ball with our Read-A-Thon, so this year we're increasing the challenge and making the event bigger, bolder and bardier. In addition to reading the classic 37 plays, including the infamous Romeo & Juliet and Macbeth, we've thrown in 4 additio...

Effective Altruism

Effective Altruism It’s a new year and many of us are making the usual resolutions: eat healthier, drink less, be more organised, and so on. But how about entering a new year, a new term as an effective altruist? What is effective altruism? ‘A philosophy and social movement which applies evidence and reason to determining the most effective ways to improve the world.’ (Wikipedia, n.d.) Each of us buy things that we don’t really need. We buy fashion items, have lavish meals out, and even drink bottled water when the water we drink out of the tap is perfectly safe to drink. By not having 4 meals out which would come to around £70, and giving the money to a relevant charity you could pay for 150 months’ worth of education for children in poverty. Being an effective altruist is mor...

Interview with Director of MTS

I caught up with MTS director Kathryn Pickering and spoke with her about the Into the Woods Performance and its production, and why being involved in MTS is such an excitement. Why did you decide to get involved in MTS? – is it because of the course you did or because it is just something you love to do? It is something I love to do (although I do study drama and music). When I started I had to make a decision about whether to continue in drama society or MTS, I chose MTS as I had been cast in their performance of A Little Shop of Horrors, however I wonder how different my university life would have been if I had continued with another society. Was there someone who inspired you to get into theatre? Sounds silly but not particularly. I always wanted to do it (performing), I...

Horses for Courses

RHUL Riding Club is one of the fastest growing clubs at university. We run weekly riding lessons for all abilities, from complete beginners to experienced riders. For those wishing to have the chance to compete, we have 3 competitive teams which compete in BUCS leagues 4 times a year. In the past, we've had some real successes in the BUCS league, and every outing is fun and relaxed. We train locally and organise transport to and from university for the riding lessons so transport is not an issue! But we're not all work and no play! We have a relaxed social side and this year there have been more socials than ever before, including our own themes for CIYK. The aim is to keep expanding the side of the club which allows members to see each other outside of lessons. The finale to our year i...

Maths Soc Plan to Come Out on Top

Royal Holloway's Mathematics Society are hoping to reform next year as a more recognised society with the aim of recruiting more members than ever and to do their best to win society of the year at the Socs Ball 2016. Jacob Arends, who has been elected as President of MathSoc and was previously the Social Secretary, stated that he is "very proud to have been given the opportunity to be in the drivers seat of a society which has been such a huge part of my university life" . Jacob comments that "By the end of next year, I would like MathSoc to hold the reputation it deserves throughout campus. I would love to see the society reach a stage where our committee and members are proud to be part of something which unifies them under the name of Mathematics. " MathSoc have many provisional ...

80s Society Article

The 80s Society is brand new and celebrates the culture of the 1980s through it's music, movies, television, fashion, games, art and perhaps even politics if we fancy something serious for a change! You might be thinking ‘Eighties society… Won’t they just sit around listening to music...?’ Of course this decade did produce some timeless hits but we plan to do far more than that! We’re about having fun and being creative; we want anyone and everyone to get involved. Just a few of our planned events include trips to London eighties nightclubs (Electric Dreams etc.), roller disco’s, theatre trips and classic car meets (you may see the DeLorean!). If this all sounds a little much, we also plan some more laid back evenings too - eighties movie screenings, quizzes and classic gaming nights...
