Plans to Bring a Swimming Pool to Egham Town Centre

Anna Robinson reports on further redevelopment plans for Egham town centre. Following the announcement of plans to redevelop Egham town centre, Runnymede Borough council is now asking for feedback on plans to build a new leisure facility, with a swimming pool and health spa. The first public consultation was held on Saturday January 28, from 10am to 4pm, to give the chance for Egham residents to feedback, offering a local perspective on the developments. This is an exciting prospect for the small suburb, not only for local Egham residents, but also for students at Royal Holloway. Runnymede Borough Council to Switch Off Night Street Lights

Anna Robinson reports on the recent council plans to turn off street lights in Egham and Englefield Green between midnight and 5am From 1 December 2016, Surrey County Council implemented a new ‘part-night lighting’ policy, which proposed that street lights in many residential areas across the county would be switched off between midnight and 5am every night. Runnymede Council have announced that this county policy will be instated in the Borough of Runnymede from February 2017, affecting the areas of both Egham and Englefield Green. This will stretch from Staines Upon Thames, all the way up to West Byfleet. A Royal Holloway student has had his final-year essay published in an esteemed theatre journal. Kai Green graduated from the 2015 Drama and Philosophy program with a First Class Honours degree. His final-year essay, part of his seminar on Contemporary British Theatre, was considered to demonstrate extraordinary originality and insight, and so passed the strict criteria of the peer-reviewed journal, 'Performance Philosophy'. Kai sent in the essay some months after he graduated, and it was published in January of this year. On Saturday 4 March 2017 people across the country are planning to congregate in Tavistock Square, London to march to Parliament, protesting about the conditions and funding of the NHS. The Demonstration has been called upon by ‘Health Campaigns Together’, often referred to as the HCT, a national network of more than 30 organisations and unions supporting the NHS. Redevelopment Plans Released for Egham Town Centre

There are huge development plans in the pipeline for Egham town centre. For the past few years, Egham been set for a 70 million pound investment, and recently Runnymede Borough Council have released plans confirming the start of the new project. In 2014 the BBC wrote an article on ‘The Egham Town Centre Team’ who were set with the intentions to ‘strengthen community pride’ by building on the town's heritage, location and education. This team included representatives from Runnymede Borough Council, the chamber of commerce, Royal Holloway University of London and Strode's College. New Science Building: Construction On Campus Begins

Construction work has begun on the new Science Building, with the building site set up and foundation work set to begin at the end of the month. The Science Building, which will occupy the area around the John Bowyer building and replace car park 5, is a move by the university to expand the space and infrastructure available to science students. It was green-lighted in the winter of 2014 through the approval of a sizeable £5 million grant, awarded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England. Missing: Woman in Egham Now Found Safely

Yesterday afternoon (February 2) a woman in Egham was reported missing by her family, and Surrey Police were put on the case. Carol Davies, a 58-year-old resident from Englefield Green, had last been seen leaving her home in a Black Audi early on Thursday morning wearing an oversized grey sweater, and grey trousers. Officers from Surrey Police were growing increasingly concerned for her welfare, as her family stated it was very "out of character for her to be away from home for this length of time without making contact". The news was spread quickly online, via social media, in the hope of increasing awareness and bringing Carol back safely. Name for New Library Centre Announced

On the 11 January 2017, the name for the new library centre was finally announced. After months of deliberation Professor Paul Layzell, Principal, and SU President Natasha Barrett announced, via a live stream on the student intranet, that the centre will be called the ‘Emily Wilding Davison Building’. With the founding institutions of both Royal Holloway and Bedford College being the two of the first in the UK to grant women access to higher education, the university wanted to landmark the new library and student service centre, to celebrate one of the renowned alumna.
