Horses for Courses

RHUL Riding Club is one of the fastest growing clubs at university. We run weekly riding lessons for all abilities, from complete beginners to experienced riders. For those wishing to have the chance to compete, we have 3 competitive teams which compete in BUCS leagues 4 times a year. In the past, we've had some real successes in the BUCS league, and every outing is fun and relaxed. We train locally and organise transport to and from university for the riding lessons so transport is not an issue! But we're not all work and no play! We have a relaxed social side and this year there have been more socials than ever before, including our own themes for CIYK. The aim is to keep expanding the side of the club which allows members to see each other outside of lessons. The finale to our year i...

Riding for Britain

Over the Easter weekend at the beginning of April, I went out to Leuven in Belgium as part of Great Britain's Student Riders Team. After winning the BUCS Nationals in 2014 and being asked to attend a trials day, I was selected to ride for GB. During Student Riders competitions, you only get five minutes to get on the horse you have drawn (having never seen it before) before having to ride a dressage test or jump a course of jumps. If you gain the best score on your horse, you qualify for the next round, with there being four dressage rounds and four jumping rounds. The first dressage round is ridden as a team with three riders competing in the arena at the same time. We did a good test but one of the other girls on my horse had previously won medals competing for Ireland, knocking me into...

Men’s Lacrosse Season Review

Previously in BUCS lacrosse leagues, the quality of a team has been based on the amount of US based or experienced players that the team has. Royal Holloway lacrosse team gained no experienced or overseas players this year and the only recruits were players who had barely heard of the sport, let alone picked up a stick. The future looked challenging for a team that had never won a piece of silverware. The entire team knew it would be an uphill battle especially with larger universities who had more players to choose from. The team began training hard each week with American coaches Brendan McCann and Jordan Boreman. Beginning their season with a win over Surrey was crucial and from there the team grew in confidence. Scores of 15-1, and 18-1 in late autumn against inferior Kent and Ports...

Maths Soc Plan to Come Out on Top

Royal Holloway's Mathematics Society are hoping to reform next year as a more recognised society with the aim of recruiting more members than ever and to do their best to win society of the year at the Socs Ball 2016. Jacob Arends, who has been elected as President of MathSoc and was previously the Social Secretary, stated that he is "very proud to have been given the opportunity to be in the drivers seat of a society which has been such a huge part of my university life" . Jacob comments that "By the end of next year, I would like MathSoc to hold the reputation it deserves throughout campus. I would love to see the society reach a stage where our committee and members are proud to be part of something which unifies them under the name of Mathematics. " MathSoc have many provisional ...

Holloway ‘double’ their success

Off the back of their recent promotion to BUCS League 3A, Royal Holloway Mens Hockey 1st XI capped of an utterly outstanding season by finishing top of LUSL (London University Sport League) and being promoted to its Premier league. In front of a raucous crowd down on the so-called Fortress Noble Astro, the men in white, green and purple edged an enticing encounter 3-2 against Royal Vets to be crowned champions for the second time in only a matter of weeks. One thing for sure, about Sunday’s encounter, was that any person watching it was being served an absolute whopper of a game. Possession being shifted from side to side at pace, crunching tackles and big hitting were only a few things that were on offer in truly one of the hardest games we have played all season. For the start of t...

Colours Ball Review 2015

Colours Ball 2015 was bigger and better than any year before it, the Bears assembled helmets removed, goggles off, boots left at home ready for the ultimate sporting celebration. This year the Bears have reached new heights, getting into the top 50 for BUCS point and a hugely successful This Girl Can campaign putting Royal Holloway on the map. The night’s most successful team was undoubtedly Women’s basketball who scooped two awards, the Team of the Year and Performance Package Team of the Year awards, following an incredible season which saw them undefeated in the league and LUSL cup winners. We wish them all the luck for their premiership play-off match later in April. Co-Pres Welfare and Diversity, Sidonie, then presented the shiny new Liberation awards, in the shape of numerous bottl...

Socs Ball Review 2015

This year’s Socs Ball saw the glitz and glam of Holloway’s societies descend upon the Thistle hotel in style. After a classy drinks reception, complete with a jazz quartet and much posing for photos, the main event got under way. Out of the ever successful performing arts societies, Shakespeare Society emerged victorious scooping two awards; the first for most improved society and the second the RAG outstanding contribution award, to honour their incredible read-a-thon, which saw members shivering outside the Windsor building whilst working their way through all 37 of the bards plays in 99 hours. Best new society went to Sustainability Society, who have made a serious impact this year with plans to hopefully bring a bike hire system to Royal Holloway in the near future. The outstanding in...

League 4A is White, Green and Purple this year

Another year of lectures almost done, another season over. But for the Hockey Men’s 1st XI, this hasn’t just been any normal season. What do I mean by this? It has been abnormal, because on Wednesday 11th March, at 14.15pm, the men in white, green and purple were crowned undefeated champions of league 4A, thereby ensuring their promotion. It had been mathematically confirmed two games previous, after the defeat of Imperial Medics in a thumping 5-0 win in front of the home faithful. It would be fair to say that we had an exuberant group of fans that day, unlike the away day experienced by the legendary Wealdstone Raider. However, after that day, what remained illusive to us and to so many teams in the past was the undefeated, ten-wins-from-ten season. A tricky home match against Ports...

Women’s Rugby Tackle Snowdon

Climbing Snowdon isn’t something that most people would consider doing at this point in the year, but here are Women’s Rugby.  We’re up for a challenge and so are committing to climb the mountain on the 7th of March! We will be raising money for Marie Curie, the BUCS charity of the year as well as a charity close to our member’s hearts and therefore will be doing what we can to raise as much money as possible. We’re really excited to start fundraising for this incredible cause and are aiming to raise at least £2000 through a series of charity events and campus stalls. This may seem like a lot, but if half the students at Royal Holloway donated just 50p we would reach our aim, so we’re not asking for a lot! One of our main events in the run up to the mountain climb will be our charity ni...

No Waves, No Glory

Well there is of course prospective glory in other things but we shall ignore that fact. Many of you out there would be surprised to hear that nestled deep in the surrey country side, on our quaint little hilltop campus, there is a burgeoning group of wannabe beach bums. Although the beach and ocean are far from our sights, there is a growing portion of our student demographic that feel at their most alive with a board underarm and sand between their toes. This is Royal Holloway Surf Club. We find surf where we can, don our wetsuits (or boardies if we leave for sunnier climates) and have quality time wadding in its soothing waters. This year sees the clubs activity grow, we are surfing more waves and expanding our water sport activity. With trips to Newquay (this country’s own little Surf...
