No Waves, No Glory

Well there is of course prospective glory in other things but we shall ignore that fact. Many of you out there would be surprised to hear that nestled deep in the surrey country side, on our quaint little hilltop campus, there is a burgeoning group of wannabe beach bums. Although the beach and ocean are far from our sights, there is a growing portion of our student demographic that feel at their most alive with a board underarm and sand between their toes. This is Royal Holloway Surf Club. We find surf where we can, don our wetsuits (or boardies if we leave for sunnier climates) and have quality time wadding in its soothing waters. This year sees the clubs activity grow, we are surfing more waves and expanding our water sport activity. With trips to Newquay (this country’s own little Surf...

2015: Playing the Game

Bears find it hard to come back after hibernation… considering the mince pies, Christmas feasts, and New Years Eve extravaganza. Yet amidst the holiday cheer, basketball bears weren’t fooling around; 2015 has hit the ground running for both Men’s and Women’s Basketball. The ladybears started off with their first game of 2015 on the home court v. UEL (University of East London). The tables turned, as this was the first close game the girls have played all season, holding their undefeated record with large margins in all of their past games. Having beat UEL in the first half of the season by 77 points, UEL surprised RHUL with two new players. The game was a rollercoaster, up in the first half by 17, then down by 8 in the 3rd quarter, only to win 65-60. It proved one thing for the Women’s te...

80s Society Article

The 80s Society is brand new and celebrates the culture of the 1980s through it's music, movies, television, fashion, games, art and perhaps even politics if we fancy something serious for a change! You might be thinking ‘Eighties society… Won’t they just sit around listening to music...?’ Of course this decade did produce some timeless hits but we plan to do far more than that! We’re about having fun and being creative; we want anyone and everyone to get involved. Just a few of our planned events include trips to London eighties nightclubs (Electric Dreams etc.), roller disco’s, theatre trips and classic car meets (you may see the DeLorean!). If this all sounds a little much, we also plan some more laid back evenings too - eighties movie screenings, quizzes and classic gaming nights...

Classics Society: Watch This Space!

There are exciting times in store for Royal Holloway’s Classics Society. In the coming weeks they will be putting on their production of Lysistrata, taking part in Classics Day and will continue to host their weekly socials. Classics society take part in a variety of activities together. Not only do they organise performances of ancient plays, enjoy movie nights and a themed night out or two, but as a society they are also very proactive in fundraising and volunteering. One of the most popular nights out the society hosts,  is the toga pub-crawl where the society don togas and celebrate their passion for the ancient world. However, it’s not only for nights out that the togas make an appearance. During this terms RAG Week, Classics Society had a sponsored toga day, where members wore brig...

An Update From Swimming

This year swimming has most definitely been the dark horse of RHUL sport, and it’s only just getting started. Despite being relatively unknown, the club has seemingly grown in strength-to-strength, attaining the highest intake of members in its history and gaining an ever-increasing reputation. Over first term, competitors partook in the annual BUCS Short Course Championships at Sheffield, securing the club’s most successful set of results to date, as well as boasting our very first finalist. The Southern division BUCS competition, where we ventured out to Norwich, was also a successful day of competing where the club was left within fingertip distance of being promoted up a division. This month will see our competitors once again head back to Sheffield to hopefully get their hands on som...

Charity Bingo Night!

Women’s Football have done it again, smashing what they could have ever hoped to achieve and raising £809 for Cancer Research UK in just two hours! Their secret..? Bingo! Charity Secretary of the club, Helena Fox spent the best part of two months organising the event which took place in Stumble Inn, chasing up various companies for their amazing donations, including many of Royal Holloway’s on campus outlets like the Students’ Union, Tommy’s Bar, Medicine, the College Shop, and the Sport’s Centre! “Bingo was unbelievable! I’m overwhelmed by how many people braved a freezing Thursday night to come out and support this incredible cause” says Helena. The night consisted of three rounds of bingo, hosted by the legend that is, Rhubarb TV’s Kate Burns, who had no trouble keeping it lively!...

#BearsDay Update- 24 National Bears!

It has been a very tiring but unforgettable weekend for the Volleyball Club. The Men’s 1st and the Women’s 1st travelled to Ashcombe to take part in the preliminary rounds of Volleyball England National Indoor Student Cup. This was an incredible opportunity for our Bears to measure their strength with teams coming from all over the South of England and London, many of which were 1st or Premier Division teams, well above the 2nd Division where our Bears usually play in. On Saturday, our Bears walked into the National Volleyball Centre in Ashcombe School slightly late, but they immediately turned the freezing hall into their cave. The day started in the best way we could have hoped. With remarkable team spirit, resilience and determination our boys took a 2-0 revenge on Chichester 1st, ag...

Dance Society Makes Big Changes

If you had told me when I began my Master’s degree at Royal Holloway in September that I would take part in a dance competition as a member of a hip hop team, I would have laughed. A lot. Nevertheless on the 29th November I found myself on the SU stage facing a rowdy crowd of contestants, friends, family and judges ready to do my thing. This term, the Royal Holloway Dance Society has made alterations to the way it’s organised. With the appointment of Eryn Filippono as president, a welcomed change is underway. To make the society more inclusive, dance lessons are now available for varied levels of experience with beginners’ classes as well as intermediate. Amazingly, the society is running four times more than last year. There is something for everyone: from hip hop to Bollywood and ballet...

Sports Club Members find their Voices!

With the New Year fast approaching, Holloway’s sports clubs will be hanging up their kit and finding their voices as part of the RHUL Sport Choir, an innovative new project led by musical director, Amy John. The choir comprises a handful of sportsmen and women with little or no singing experience except their sideline chanting, to raise money for this year’s BUCS charity; Marie Curie Cancer Care. “It aims to get people out of their comfort zone” the former Women’s Football President explains. “We’re doing something completely different to raise money for charity”. The Sport Choir is already set for an exciting few months with preparations in place for a launch night, and the planned release and sale of a single after a Colour’s Ball performance in March, with all proceeds going to Marie Cu...

Renovation Revitalises Rhul Sport

Nobles took quite a transformation over the summer. The former sports field, consisting of football and rugby pitches, is now unrecognisable. In their stead stands a sand based hockey pitch, tennis and netball courts; in addition there is a multi-use games area and the 3G pitch. Only returning students can fully appreciate the new facilities at their disposal given the virtue of comparison to those they replaced. Gone are the days of training in half-darkness throughout winter when the only source of light was the archaic and unreliable scattering of floodlights - which when turned on sounded not too dissimilar to that of a plane departing the runway. No longer are we attempting to play anything that resembles sport with severely waterlogged terrain underfoot, helplessly churning it up ev...
