Vehicle Incident at the gates of Royal Holloway

This morning at approximately 10.05am there was a collision by the front gates. Student Evie Courtier was crossing the bridge at the moment of the crash just after 10 this morning and states she “heard a commotion below” before looking down to a man disembarked from his motorbike, and at least 3 cars involved. The situation seemed severe, but the public passing below took action immediately and within minutes the police and an ambulance had been called. When passing about 20 minutes later other students commented on the situation, however it all seemed to be in the control of the emergency services. Details have not yet been released on the severity of the incident or any casualties, however it is not believed to be fatal. Egham Hill is a notorious location for crashes, this is al...

Varsity is coming to Royal Holloway!

With the start of the new academic year, exciting news was announced at the SU on Monday 3rd. Over 1000 ‘bears’ attended the SU to hear the announcement from Steph Milne, the Co-President of Sports and Development, that a Varsity between Royal Holloway and the University of Surrey will be occurring on the 29th March 2017. A varsity match is defined as a sporting fixture between two university rivals. The first varsity was between Oxford and Cambridge University in 1827 – Royal Holloway’s inaugural participation means 2017 will be the year students here have the opportunity to join the tradition. After being announced at the SU, the official video was shared on Facebook the following morning – revealing the Varsity Teaser Video. The University of Surrey previously competed against ...

Egham Boasts Michelin Star Restaurant

Looking for a casual meal at a Michelin star restaurant? Look no further than Egham. This unassuming Surrey town is now home to the county’s only Michelin star restaurant as the Tudor Room at The Great Fosters hotel grabbed the coveted dining accolade. Previously, Drake’s, in Ripley, and The Latymer, in Pennyhill Park, represented Surrey in the Michelin awards. However, they were stripped their previous accomplishment in the recent launch of the Michelin Guide, Great Britain and Ireland. Instead, Douglas Balish’s restaurant, situated in a 16th century royal hunting lodge-turned-hotel, now boasts the elite seal of culinary prowess. Described as “classic but with a modern twist”, the cuisine at The Tudor Room will set you back a modest £58 per person, with the menu including glut...

Egham War Memorial Vandalised

A monument in Egham bearing the names of the town’s lost soldiers has been defaced in what police have called a “shocking act of criminal damage”. The obelisk and accompanying plaques, just outside of St. John’s Church, were targeted for the senseless destruction sometime over the night of 3 August. It appears as if the perpetrators prised off the plaques before shattering them, while damage was also committed to the memorial wreaths surrounding the monument. The attack comes just a few months before Remembrance Day. The vicar of St. John’s church, Rev. Jeff Wattley, today expressed his sadness at the events, saying: “It’s very sad that something as precious for the memories of many people in Egham has been mistreated in such a way. “It looks as if it was primarily just p...

An Update From Swimming

This year swimming has most definitely been the dark horse of RHUL sport, and it’s only just getting started. Despite being relatively unknown, the club has seemingly grown in strength-to-strength, attaining the highest intake of members in its history and gaining an ever-increasing reputation. Over first term, competitors partook in the annual BUCS Short Course Championships at Sheffield, securing the club’s most successful set of results to date, as well as boasting our very first finalist. The Southern division BUCS competition, where we ventured out to Norwich, was also a successful day of competing where the club was left within fingertip distance of being promoted up a division. This month will see our competitors once again head back to Sheffield to hopefully get their hands on som...

#BearsDay Update- 24 National Bears!

It has been a very tiring but unforgettable weekend for the Volleyball Club. The Men’s 1st and the Women’s 1st travelled to Ashcombe to take part in the preliminary rounds of Volleyball England National Indoor Student Cup. This was an incredible opportunity for our Bears to measure their strength with teams coming from all over the South of England and London, many of which were 1st or Premier Division teams, well above the 2nd Division where our Bears usually play in. On Saturday, our Bears walked into the National Volleyball Centre in Ashcombe School slightly late, but they immediately turned the freezing hall into their cave. The day started in the best way we could have hoped. With remarkable team spirit, resilience and determination our boys took a 2-0 revenge on Chichester 1st, ag...

Waitrose Egham Opening Further Delayed

The eagerly anticipated opening of the new multi-million pound building which will house Waitrose in Egham has been further delayed. The supermarket was originally due to open in the Spring of this year, but the date was pushed back to the last week of October. However, the project is still yet to be completed. The building will see a new Waitrose supermarket with underground parking and delivery access alongside an 80 room Travelodge. Though Waitrose have not divulged the reason for the delay in proceedings, reportedly it has been caused over the question of employee parking spaces. Waitrose have stated that staff will be asked to park offsite, as the company considers customer parking to be a ‘priority’. This news has been the cause of further worry for Egham residents who already str...

#BearsDay Update: Curse of the final minute for Men’s Football 2s

On this year’s 5th of November #BearsDay the fireworks started early as the Men’s Football 2nd team faced University of Surrey 3rd on Nobles. A goal fest ended in another massive blow to morale in the dying seconds of the game: 4-4. After four weeks of football, it is safe to say that this season is characterised by goals, goals, and more goals, with 7 goals scored per game on average. We went into the game on a high after a great performance against Medway 2 (4-1). Surrey had won all of its previous games, but within 15 minutes we were 2-0 up. Antoine scored his 3rd and 4th goal of the season after quick breaks and inch perfect assists. Surrey then got a goal back before half time, due to poor defending on a free kick. A header cam off the post and left our goalie Harrison Elliott powe...
