Eyesore Building Developments Across Royal Holloway

Eyesore Building developments outside the Windsor Building and the famous Founder's Building are fully underway and taking away some of the beauty of the RHUL campus. The project, which has an expected completion date of September 2017, began this summer and now term has commenced, and students have assembled back to Egham, the changes across campus are not unnoticeable. One first year student, living on the East side of Founder’s building, comments that the close proximity of the site to student accommodation means there is less need for an alarm for those 9am lectures, stating “although the building grind is not unbearable, it can certainly act as an alternative wake-up call in the morning”. When Bedford Library opened in 1994, Royal Holloway’s student population was considerabl...

Fire in Egham Prezzo Restaurant

At around 5.45am this morning five fire engines were sent to deal with a fire that broke out in Prezzo, Egham. The Italian restaurant on Egham Hill roundabout reportedly caught fire on the top level of the building and the blaze proceeded to make its way to the lower level - where customers would typically dine. Luckily there was no one in the building at the time, so there were no injuries to report, but Surrey Fire and Rescue Service are setting up an inquest to determine what may have started the blaze. The fire was tackled and put out by around 7.25am but delays were caused on Egham Hill (A30) until well after 8am. It has not been possible to contact a spokesperson for Prezzo at this time, but the restaurant will be shut until further notice, until it has been refurbished f...

‘Founder’s library isn’t going anywhere’

This afternoon Nayab Cheema, President of Royal Holloway's Students' Union, released a statement quashing rumours that Founders' Library is to cease functioning as a student workspace once the construction of the new library centre is complete. In a blog post on the SU website she stated that 'we would like to reassure you by saying that Founder’s library isn’t going anywhere.' The beginning of this week saw a misinformed online petition circulating on social media that suggested that the College planned to transform Founder's library into a staff eating space once the new library and student services centre is constructed, prompting uproar from current students and alumni alike. However, in her statement Nayab reassured students that "the new library has been designed to complement ...

Exhibition in commemoration of Royal Holloways suffrage history

The suffragette campaign swept through Britain in the late 18th century in demand for greater gender equality and the expansion of the political franchise to women. This year marks the release of the motion picture 'Suffragette', and a growing recognition for the campaign of rights for women. The ‘Suffrage at Royal Holloway’ exhibition in early October commemorated the inspiring campaign for women in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. This was featured in the Victorian Gallery one of the many historical gems of Royal Holloway, and a rather fitting location for the celebration given the era. Former alumna Emily Wilding Davidson, whose ideas of women’s rights were founded during her five terms at the university in 1892, featured in the exhibit and is particularly notable for her mi...

Egham Museum to re-open with £40k funding from Runnymede Council

Following heavy torrential rain in mid August, Egham Museum has been closed for over a month due to flooding. However after just over a month of closure, the museum may soon re-open once a new curator is found. Egham Museum is a free entry historical exhibition museum which includes various exhibitions - the most popular of late being the Magna Carta exhibition in light of the recent 800th anniversary of the signing of the document. Egham Museum attracted around 3,000 people over the summer to visit the Magna Carta exhibition and commemorate the anniversary. The museum however is not always this popular and attracts other business by offering courses to the community (job/careers workshops etc). Egham Museum also acts as a bridge of communication between the community of Egham, the u...
