A society for all film fans

Whether you like making films, watching films, or just want to try out a new hobby and make friends, the Royal Holloway Film Festival society is for you. Despite only having existed for two years, we have already won Best New Society in our first year, runners-up and then winners in the Skills and Employability, both years, as well as one of our members having won the Freshman of the year award. On top of this, we had one of our films get into the final 15 of the international film competition the 48 Film Project, with our entry being screened in Hollywood in September. We also set up the first ever Roho Film Fest on campus, a week-long festival showing short films from across the world and including talks by industry professionals, such as Raindance founder Elliot Grove. There are p...

Fierceness, Deep Heat and Glitter

2014’s Club of the year, the RH Tom Cats are a highly successful sports team on and off campus. We compete across the country throughout the year in Cheerleading, Stunt, Jazz and Hip-Hop. If you’re not competitive then our lively Sideline team could be for you. Our Sideline team is the face of Tom Cats on Campus and attends sports fixtures supporting other Royal Holloway teams. Think cheerleading is just for girls? Think again. Our boys have no issues trying to pick up girls. We lift people rather than just weights. It takes power, strength and athleticism to be a cheerleader but we have a great laugh while we’re staying in shape. We are Tom Cats and we like to play as hard as we work! We love lots of socials. This is where teammates become friends and friends become family. The RH T...

Do you feel like you’re at Hogwarts?

Welcome Fresher’s to Royal Holloway! There are hundreds of clubs and societies here but, in my opinion, Harry Potter is one of the best! We can offer you a chance to de-stress from your studies and take a time out. Our activities range from movie nights where you can get to know people, to quiz nights where you can test your knowledge and compete with your fellow society members, and a trip to the Warner Brothers Studio Tour. Let your excitement for Harry Potter reach its full capacity! If you are sporty, then we have Quidditch! As a society we could not be more excited to start. There will be training, and friendly matches. If you have a competitive streak, then we need you! As a society we are only in our second year, and this year is going to be bigger and better than the last!...

Great year for fledgling Table Tennis Club!

RHUL Table Tennis has a lot to celebrate on its first birthday! This past twelve months have been nothing short of amazing for the table tennis club! Awards, league wins, cup medals, charity events - you name it, we’ve done it! After a very positive first Fresher’s Fayre in September, the club has come on leaps and bounds. We entered three teams in the British University and College competition - one men’s and two women’s team. Our men’s team had a fantastic season! Their only defeat coming on the last round of fixtures after promotion and the league title were secured. Captain and Captain Elect, Alex Reilly and Patrick Hurley had sensational seasons; Patrick’s only defeat coming at the hands of a former international. After a shaky start, the women finished the season strongly (3rd ...

Four to Celebrate!

Riding: What a fantastic year it’s been, with both the A and B team enjoying great success this season. Both teams won their home competitions with the A-Team collecting one red team rosette, two yellow team rosettes and numerous individual rosettes from their away competitions. The B-Team also had great success away bringing home team rosettes in every colour and plenty of individual ones too. This included a first place rosette for Team Captain Rachel Walsh in the first competition of the season! This success resulted in Rachel, along with A-Team rider and Social Secretary Melissa Chalk, being awarded half colours. Their excellent and consistent form led the A-Team to become the first known riding team in Royal Holloway history to compete in the Regional Qualifiers. Despite competing ...

An Interview with… MTS & Women’s Rugby!

I'm sat in Founders south quad on a gorgeous summer day. Across from me are Lewis Mullins, Pippa Gentry and Matt Abrams from the Musical Theatre Society. Lewis is the President, Pippa, President-Elect, and Matt has been Musical Director of various productions including Little Shop of Horrors and Summer Cabaret last year. I feel awkward to have propositioned these people that I barely know to interview them about their past achievements of the year. And what achievements they are. Lewis dives straight in with the statistics I suspect he’s quoted many times before. Three productions, and the intensive weekend show with twenty musical numbers. Not always easy to remember, Matt cuts in. Imaginably so. Volunteering has been a massive part of the year, with shows entertaining Melwood Old P...

Fresher’s football future at Royal Holloway

Are you looking to meet new friends and have a great social life at university as well as playing competitive sport week in week out? Whether you are a Fresher or a returner, RHUL Men’s Football is the place for you. As the biggest sports club on campus, featuring six teams and over 100 members, Men’s Football welcomes players of all levels, whether you are new to the game or have been playing since before you could walk. With two games and one or two training sessions a week, regular socials, various volunteering opportunities and an end-of-year football tour, Men’s Football promises to make your time at RHUL as good as it can be. Last season the club knew great successes, with the 1st team winning the LUSL Cup, and the 2nd and 4th teams getting promotions in both BUCS and LUSL l...

A ‘Rumble in the Jungle’

After a successful development 7s tournament last year, RHUL Women's Rugby are back again with a BIGGER and BETTER event; ‘Rumble in the Jungle' 7s. Women's Rugby is taking over Windsor RFC on the 8th June to showcase 7s talent from a range of South-East University Women's teams. The day is all about developing the 7s game at University level to give teams the chance to play more 7s whilst the Sun is still shining. As the name gives away, the tournament is themed so every team takes part as an animal (three guesses on which we will be?) It should make the event a light-hearted, fantastic tournament, similar to the great atmosphere of the London Sevens tournament. With music provided by Insanity Radio, a BBQ, face-painting, raffles and much MORE, the tournament is set to be a showc...

A Review of the Ashes

Australia have annihilated this wretchedly poor England side. England have been pilloried by the Australian media, pulverised by the pace of Johnson and Harris and battered submissive by the tenacity of the Aussie batsmen. The (deranged) English Supporters who presumed the series to be a foregone conclusion have been made to look foolish. England were ‘marmalised' in Brisbane by a colossal 381 runs thanks to hundreds from the pugnacious Warner and captain Clarke, sandwiched in between the mustachioed Johnson's extreme pace, frightening the England batsmen into handing him 9 wickets in the match. In Adelaide, England were similarly thumped by 218 runs. Australia's 570-9 dec was built upon hundreds from Clarke and the irrepressible Haddin. The English reply was nothing short of atrocious wi...

January’s Four to Watch!

The Ping-Pong Revolution is afoot! As we enter the second term of the year and the second term where RHUL has been graced by their sparkly new Table Tennis team, things are looking good for our young ping-pongers! The Men's team currently sit unbeaten at the top of their league following their most recent victory against Middlesex University and at this point in proceedings are virtually guaranteed promotion. The Women's teams are currently gearing up for a big match – against each other! – for a place in the semi-final for their division. As well as all of this good news, 3 Men's players and 3 Women's players are looking to enter the BUCs Individual Championships which will take place in Nottingham later in February. Good luck to them! Lastly a nod to our friends over at the A...
