Building work continues at St John’s

The second phase of building work at Egham’s parish church has begun, after completion of the foundations of the new building in late 2015. The building work is part of the church’s Building for the Future project and since early 2015 builders have been working on site to demolish the old church centre, readying the site for the building of a new centre to meet the needs of the church and community. Work was also required on the original Georgian church building to create the foundations of the new link between this and the complementary modern extension. The second phase of work began on 4th January after members of the congregation gathered on the footprint of the building to share prayers and hopes for the new facility after the Sunday services the previous day. The project has...

Man questioned over Egham arson attacks

A 20-year-old man has been questioned by police on suspicion of arson and released on bail until 12 January 2016, after charity donation bags were set alight outside of Egham’s Oxfam and Blue Cross shops. Despite thousands of pounds of damage being caused, both charity shops are now reopen to the public, with Oxfam managing to reopen on the same day the attack occurred. Investigating crime officers are currently working with fire investigators to determine the cause of the fires, but said the incidents are being treated as arson. Oxfam manager Jasmin Shelley said the public have been more than supportive, with businesses such as Enterprise Rent-A-Car offering their support. Employee Chris Beresford has offered to raise money to cover the costs of repairing the door frame and window w...

Egham set for £70m investment

£70m is set to be invested into Egham town tentre, the leader of Runneymede Borough Council has revealed, creating a “new gateway for visitors”. The investment is set to include new homes, shops, a gym and a hotel, with the main areas of redevelopment being Station Road north and the corner of the High Street. The Egham town centre 'master-plan report' was published in November 2013, to ‘advance opportunities for the town centre’. The report states that ‘the area has significant potential for redevelopment, tackling a number of weak areas of townscape and establishing a new good quality public space’. The council would own and run the development, earning returns on the investment. Project leader Patrick Roberts says that “part of our strategy is to acquire assets to change the shape of...

Fire in Egham Prezzo Restaurant

At around 5.45am this morning five fire engines were sent to deal with a fire that broke out in Prezzo, Egham. The Italian restaurant on Egham Hill roundabout reportedly caught fire on the top level of the building and the blaze proceeded to make its way to the lower level - where customers would typically dine. Luckily there was no one in the building at the time, so there were no injuries to report, but Surrey Fire and Rescue Service are setting up an inquest to determine what may have started the blaze. The fire was tackled and put out by around 7.25am but delays were caused on Egham Hill (A30) until well after 8am. It has not been possible to contact a spokesperson for Prezzo at this time, but the restaurant will be shut until further notice, until it has been refurbished f...

Egham Museum to re-open with £40k funding from Runnymede Council

Following heavy torrential rain in mid August, Egham Museum has been closed for over a month due to flooding. However after just over a month of closure, the museum may soon re-open once a new curator is found. Egham Museum is a free entry historical exhibition museum which includes various exhibitions - the most popular of late being the Magna Carta exhibition in light of the recent 800th anniversary of the signing of the document. Egham Museum attracted around 3,000 people over the summer to visit the Magna Carta exhibition and commemorate the anniversary. The museum however is not always this popular and attracts other business by offering courses to the community (job/careers workshops etc). How will you carry all of this home? Even between two or three of you it's a struggle that your workouts at the gym don't seem to be helping. So why not just wheel the trolley home with you? It was your pound that unlocked it and therefore you may as well get adequate use from it, right? Well, there's a reason or two why taking the trolley home with you is not the most sensible idea. Roadwork Chaos on Egham Hill

Road works on Egham Hill are proving problematic, causing congestion and making access into the university difficult. The works are situated on the A30 Egham Hill junction with St Jude’s Road, the crossroads heading into Englefield Green, an area heavily populated by students. Traffic can be seen queuing on a daily basis from the entrance to Virginia Water right up to set of traffic lights where the road works begin. The work is only in to its third phase and is due to stop at the end of May before the Magna Carta anniversary celebrations in June. Follow-up work is then expected to be carried out afterwards which will then only increase the congestion causing utmost inconvenience for student, pedestrians, residents, and drivers alike. The road works currently underway are aiming to w...
