Football fraudsters ordered to payback £1m

Two convicted criminals have been ordered to pay back nearly £1m thanks to successful orders made under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002. The pair who illegally sold access to Premier League football coverage are required to make a payback of £992,947.60 following a number of successful confiscations and forfeiture orders following a hearing at Guildford Crown Court on Friday (September 30). They have to pay back the money by January 3 2017, or at risk of serving a further six years behind bars. Hopkins, 47, of Park Road, Stoke Poges, Slough, Berkshire and Passlow, 58, of Broomfield Drive, Ascot, Berkshire were both pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud between January 2008 and September 2012, in a prosecution by the Football Association Premier League (FAPL). Six Injured in Egham Collision

Six Egham occupants were injured when a black Nissan pick-up truck collided head on with a white Mercedes van around 7:40pm on Sunday 2nd October. The incident occurred at the Vicarage Road junction by Mead Close in Egham. The road was closed while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the event were carried out at the scene, blocking vehicle access. Out of the six pedestrians who were involved in the collision, two were deemed to have been seriously injured. They were then taken to St Geroge’s Hospital via ambulance to be treated for the injuries to their arms and legs. Surrey Police is appealing for witnesses of the collision, which continues the ever more frequent series of road accidents in Egham. In February two Royal Holloway students were injured, one seriously,...

Racial Volunteer Force clashes with student protesters at Royal Holloway

On Saturday the 22nd October, a political group called the Racial Volunteer Force organised a demonstration at the main gate of the Royal Holloway campus. Prompted by an ongoing case involving two outsourced cleaning staff, hired by the company, CleanTech, contracted by the Students' Union, they arrived at the entrance just after 2pm, carrying flags, banners, and a megaphone. The 10 men and 1 woman were met with a throng of at least 50 students, which grew to maybe 80 or even 100 later on, brandishing their own banners and homemade flags. Their anti-fascist agenda was made clear as chants of “Nazi scum, off our streets” arose to welcome the arrival of the RVF. In both groups, faces could be seen covered by scarves, wary of betraying their identity to the opposition as well as the ...

Vehicle Incident at the gates of Royal Holloway

This morning at approximately 10.05am there was a collision by the front gates. Student Evie Courtier was crossing the bridge at the moment of the crash just after 10 this morning and states she “heard a commotion below” before looking down to a man disembarked from his motorbike, and at least 3 cars involved. The situation seemed severe, but the public passing below took action immediately and within minutes the police and an ambulance had been called. When passing about 20 minutes later other students commented on the situation, however it all seemed to be in the control of the emergency services. Details have not yet been released on the severity of the incident or any casualties, however it is not believed to be fatal. Egham Hill is a notorious location for crashes, this is al...

Egham Boasts Michelin Star Restaurant

Looking for a casual meal at a Michelin star restaurant? Look no further than Egham. This unassuming Surrey town is now home to the county’s only Michelin star restaurant as the Tudor Room at The Great Fosters hotel grabbed the coveted dining accolade. Previously, Drake’s, in Ripley, and The Latymer, in Pennyhill Park, represented Surrey in the Michelin awards. However, they were stripped their previous accomplishment in the recent launch of the Michelin Guide, Great Britain and Ireland. Instead, Douglas Balish’s restaurant, situated in a 16th century royal hunting lodge-turned-hotel, now boasts the elite seal of culinary prowess. Described as “classic but with a modern twist”, the cuisine at The Tudor Room will set you back a modest £58 per person, with the menu including glut...

Egham War Memorial Vandalised

A monument in Egham bearing the names of the town’s lost soldiers has been defaced in what police have called a “shocking act of criminal damage”. The obelisk and accompanying plaques, just outside of St. John’s Church, were targeted for the senseless destruction sometime over the night of 3 August. It appears as if the perpetrators prised off the plaques before shattering them, while damage was also committed to the memorial wreaths surrounding the monument. The attack comes just a few months before Remembrance Day. The vicar of St. John’s church, Rev. Jeff Wattley, today expressed his sadness at the events, saying: “It’s very sad that something as precious for the memories of many people in Egham has been mistreated in such a way. “It looks as if it was primarily just p...

Number 1 Safest Place to be a Student?

Following the ‘Crime Rate Doubles in Englefield Green’ (written by Orbital Journalist Hannah Foord) article which gave us worrying statistics of increasing crime levels in the area, more incidents have occurred. There was a continual stream of criminal acts leading up to the Christmas months and end of term. Rather worryingly many of these incidents are of a violent nature. Some incidents since the ‘Crime Rate Doubles in Englefield Green’ article being published in October, are included below: Early on the twelfth of November there was the bag theft incident on campus, which led to two suspected assaults. The helicopters had to be brought in to successfully detain the man. On the twenty-sixth of October a man was mugged for his MP3 player in Egham, the three hooded suspects threa...

Re-opening of Prezzo following the November fire

On the 13 November 2015 the Italian restaurant, Prezzo – located on Egham Hill roundabout - reportedly caught fire. The blaze proceeded to make its way to the lower level, where customers would typically dine. The fire which occurred at 5:45am, had five fire engines sent to deal with the blaze, although it was reportedly put out by around 7:30am. Not only had the fire not resulted in severe delays for at least half an hour for motorist on Egham Hill and along the A30, but also meant the restaurant had to be shut until further notice. Luckily, at the time, no one was in the building so there were no reported injuries but an inquest from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service to determine the cause of the blaze was opened – although the details have not yet been confirmed from the authoriti...
