Royal Holloway Slammed as “Most Hardline University Employer in UK” Over Strikes

Royal Holloway UCU (University College Union) have claimed that no other university in the UK has made such extensive threats to staff over strike action and have called for academics to not be "intimidated" by the College's "short-sighted approach" to the strikes. Letters that academics have received are encouraging staff to give advance notice of strike action - a move that the UCU claim will undermine the principle of the strikes. Academics are also being told that they must give 5 days notice for action short of a strike (ASOS). The notification forms that have been sent to staff suggest that 'working to contract', 'not undertaking voluntary activities', 'not covering for absent colleagues' and 'not rescheduling lectures or classes cancelled due to strike action' may be counted a...

Everything you need to know about the UCU strikes: why and how you can support your academics.

If you don’t need to be persuaded, scroll down for an email template that you can send to Paul Layzell and other members of Senior Management to come out in support of your striking academics and potentially end the strikes sooner. What, when and why are the strikes taking place? The Universities and College Union (UCU) have called for four weeks of ‘unprecedented’ strike action over a deal made by the governing body for universities, University UK (UUK) that would see the average lecturer lose roughly £10,000 of their pension a year in a restructuring of the University Superannuations Scheme (USS). Pensions which are usually paid in by academics each month and then matched by the university, would be tied 100% to the stock market. This means that universities would void their respon...

What’s the Deal With…tardigrades?

With a name meaning 'slow stepper', these eight-legged microorganisms might not sound very exciting. But tardigrades are arguably the toughest cookies in the animal kingdom and the most resilient creatures to have ever been discovered. First described in 1773, these unassuming creatures, only up to a millimetre in length, have been found all over the world, from hot springs, to Mount Everest, to the freezing conditions of Antarctica. Not many other animals have been proven to survive a few minutes of exposure to temperatures of 151°C and equally 'live to tell the tale' after a quick freeze at -272°C (colder than the average temperature on the surface of Pluto). And talking of extra-terrestrial conditions, tardigrades can even survive the vacuum of space for 10 days, when we wouldn't las...

Love is in the air…

Considering the fact that Valentines is fast approaching, the Lifestyle team is focusing on dating and love; as we know how hard it can be to find someone when you’re swamped with work. Therefore for this issue’s photoshoot we decided to recreate famous iconic images of love with real couples, just to prove it is possible to find someone at Royal Holloway. We photographed Fashion Society’s president Grace Caro and her boyfriend, in the style of the renowned V-day Kiss in New York’s Time Square (1945). The original was photographed by Alfred Eisenstaedt and portrays an American sailor kissing a woman (a nurse) in a white dress on Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day) in Times Square. It is so iconic because if taken from any other angle the lighting would hide either the sailor or the n...

Will you Go Green in 2016?

The week January 25th- 29th is Go Green Week and as a University we will be highlighting and putting a spotlight on the environment. Environmental issues such as climate change and energy consumption are more pressing than ever as the international Climate change talks or COP21 have shown with global commitment by over 200 countries to not let global temperature rise beyond 3 degrees have shown. This can be further seen by President Barrack Obama who said during the talks ‘We are the first generation to feel the effect of climate change and the last generation who can do something about it.’ As a university it may seem redundant to try to reduce amount how much students contribute to man-made Climate change as international agreements such as COP21 seem to be the real ways to achieve subs...

Collision on Egham Roundabout

A collision occurred yesterday, Friday the 15th of January, at around 3:15 PM on the Prezzo roundabout in Egham. Driving past the scene at 3:35 PM, three cars and one bicycle remained on the roundabout, indicating they were either involved in the collision, or at least, witnesses of the incident. Three police cars and one ambulance attended the scene. Paramedics appeared to be checking a female for injury at the back of the ambulance. Traffic continued to flow slowly under the manual control of a police officer. A school bus was forced to change route due to the scene still not being clear as it went to collect students, from school. However, the emergency services had the situation under control and cleared by the 5 PM rush hour traffic. Police report that 'no Royal Holloway stu...
