RHUL Historian Awarded Prestigious Prize

Earlier this year, Daniel Beer, British historian and History lecturer here at Royal Holloway, published his groundbreaking book The House of the Dead: Siberian Exile under the Tsars. It is an insight into Russian history and the Tsars’ role in exiling people to Siberia under brutal conditions. The book is meticulously researched and showcases the revolutionary spirit and the regime’s desire to quell it as quickly and effectively as possible. Since its release, the book was shortlisted for the Wolfson History Prize 2017, the Pushkin House Russian Book Prize 2017 and the Longman-History Today Book Prize 2017, all of which are extremely prestigious historical and literary prizes. Big Giving for RHUL’s Future Students

On Tuesday 28 November, Royal Holloway launched the Big Give Christmas Challenge here. It is an annual event in the UK that was founded by RHUL Honorary Fellow Sir Alec Reed in 2007. The premise of the Big Give Challenge is simple: any online donations made within the allotted time will be matched in funding, essentially doubling the donation at no extra cost to the donator. It is the UK’s biggest online match funding campaign. The campaign opened nationally on Tuesday at 12pm and will go on until 12pm on Tuesday 5 December. RHUL is attempting to raise funds for scholarships and work placements to be given to students that require financial support to attend university or undergo important work experience. Model Defers Royal Holloway Due to Debilitating Illness

Destiny Sedlacek, a 19-year old girl from Weybridge, Surrey was diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome in 2016. Ehlers Danlos syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that affects a person’s connective tissue. It would lead to symptoms such as skin being stretched out, loose joints and abnormal-looking scars. Prior to her diagnosis, Destiny was previously a model featured in Vogue Magazine. She was the official model for films like The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Fury. She has also modelled for popular make-up brand Rimmel London UK. She studied Forensic Science at college but her diagnosis meant she was unable to attend her classes. A theatre will usually create a season of shows with a shared concept, and an example of this is the upcoming season of Oscar Wilde at the Vaudeville Theatre in the West End. It is often the case with Shakespeare’s Globe, especially during Emma Rice’s time as the artistic director, with seasons called ‘Summer of Love’, for example, or ‘The Wonder Season’. Michele Theil reviews the Raise-And-Give Talent Show, an event raising money for three excellent charities. The Raise-And-Give society’s charity event, aptly named ‘Royal Holloway’s Got Talent’ was hosted in the SU Main Hall and allowed students and parents to see a wide variety of talents and acts. The show aimed to raise money for Action Against Hunger, Meningitis Now and The White Lodge Centre. Action Against Hunger is “a global charity committed to saving the lives of malnourished children in over 40 countries”. Dissent & Disapproval: English PEN’s Muslim Ban Protest

President Trump’s executive order banning refugees, migrants and visitors from Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Somalia from entering the United States for a period of three months has sparked protests all over the whole world. As those seven countries are predominantly Muslim, people have taken to calling it a ‘Muslim Ban’ and protesting against it in an effort to stand against the somewhat questionable reasoning behind the ban. Essay Published By Royal Holloway Student

A Royal Holloway student has had his final-year essay published in an esteemed theatre journal. Kai Green graduated from the 2015 Drama and Philosophy program with a First Class Honours degree. His final-year essay, part of his seminar on Contemporary British Theatre, was considered to demonstrate extraordinary originality and insight, and so passed the strict criteria of the peer-reviewed journal, 'Performance Philosophy'. Kai sent in the essay some months after he graduated, and it was published in January of this year. Dancing With The Stars

The Royal Hollywood Dance Show, hosted by the RHUL Dance Society, consisted of three acts of differing dance styles as well as a few musical performances, all performed to an incredible level. The Dance Society’s annual show had dances choreographed to songs from famous films across the ages with rehearsals only beginning 4 weeks ago, an amazing feat for the calibre of performances I witnessed. While every piece was outstanding in its own way, there were several standout performances that I found to be particularly amazing and deserving of recognition. ‘Inside The OR’, a competition street dance choreographed by Dance Society President Eden Brown, had dancers in surgical scrubs and masks, dancing to theme songs from medical TV shows. ‘Upside Down’, a Burlesque piece ...
