Ever wondered how life began for the fashion icon and infamous actress, Audrey Hepburn? From her traumatic upbringing in the German-occupied Netherlands to her overwhelming success in Hollywood and inspirational outreach work, get up-close and personal with some rarely seen photographs and prints donated by her family. This wonderful exhibition has been on at the National Portrait Gallery in London since 2nd July, but it hasn’t decreased in popularity. On Saturday the 19th September I was given a very exciting opportunity, which involved working as a backstage intern at London Fashion Week, representing the designer Rohmir. I make no lie in pretending I have any prior experience in this sector what so ever, nor do I consider myself a leading fashionista, however I can honestly say it was one of the best experiences I have done. You start university and suddenly you’re facing 20 questions from friends and family. As a smaller university Royal Holloway is not universally known so here are a few answers to some FAQs. 1. How’s life in London? Maybe it’s because of Holloway Prison or being part of the University of London, but almost everyone I talk to assumes I’m living in London. Take a deep breath to answer this and explain how you actually live 40 minutes away by train, and no, you’re nowhere near Holloway prison. We’ve all had that moment when we realise that everyone will be having the time of their life in Barcelona, Saint-Tropez or even Los Angeles for the summer and we won’t be. Sometimes money is tight. Sometimes money is as tight as our jeans are as we’ve spent way too much on Domino’s. However, not going on holiday isn’t the end of the world. Spending two weeks away from egg-sized Egham to intern at a production company in London was the push I needed to dabble in the ‘real world’. I jumped out of bed on my first day as the alarm went off at 6:30am. I knew being late wasn’t going to cut it! Now, what was I going to wear to work? How casual is ‘casual attire’? I ended up going with a black and white striped shirt and black jeans and hoped for the best. Turns out casual attire is actually pretty casual… phew. Armed Police Called to Egham Station

On Sunday the 1st of February armed police arrived at both Egham and Virginia Water train stations in search of a man possessing a firearm absconding from London. Passengers waiting at the stations reported that several police response vehicles arrived on Sunday morning, carrying armed police and dog units who proceeded to make a sweep of the stations. A Spokesman from Surrey Police reported that officers were indeed called to the railway stations in both Egham and Virginia Waters after the Metropolitan Police Service had alerted them at approximately 10:15am. Likewise a spokesman from the Metropolitan Police said: “Police were called at approximately 8.30am to reports of a male seen with a firearm at Victoria Coach Station." Rail Fare Increase to Hit Royal Holloway Commuters

A rise in train fare prices in England and Wales came into affect on the 2nd January 2015. Regulated fares, including season tickets, increased by on average 2.2%, although some rose by 2.5%. Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin has tried to justify the increase by citing the need for the vital maintenance and improvement of the country’s rail infrastructure. This major investment in the train industry aims to continue the modernisation to stations, as is happening currently at London Bridge, and to the railways themselves. Although, as the government was quick to point out, the increase is the lowest annual rise in five years, it is higher than the current level of inflation and more than the current increase in annual wages. King’s College Rebrand Causes Controversy

Last month it was announced that a fellow college of the University of London, King's, would begin a £300,000 re-branding campaign, which will see the institution change its name from King's College, London to simply King's London. The change is due to come into force in February of this year, when the university will officially change its name, though still keeping the title of King’s College, London for legal documents, academic citations and the awarding of degrees. The proposed change has resulted in widespread controversy with students at the University insisting that the re-brand is “ridiculous” when speaking to The Times Higher Education supplement. Magna Carta Centre to Open at Royal Holloway

2015 marks the 800th anniversary of a monumental document in British history, the Magna Carta (1215). To mark this anniversary, Royal Holloway, will be launching ‘The Magna Carta Centre for Individual Freedom’. This will include a Doctoral Scholarship Grant, offered by the Leverhulme Trust, worth £1 million. It will enable 15 post-graduate students to be funded, with the university offering a further 5 students the chance to pursue the course. The charter issued by King John of England in the Runnymede Borough, is a symbolic cornerstone of the British constitution, it introduced for the first time the idea that everyone, including the King, was subject to the law. ‘Rich, Russian & Living in London’: a title worthy of Channel 4, but it is, in fact, the name of the BBC’s latest foray into cutting-edge documentary. An account of a selection of wealthy Russian-Londoners, we delve into the depths of a world unseen by, and unknown to most of the population. Those of us who cannot afford rhinestone-encrusted Jaguars or whimsically spend hundreds of thousands on an artwork. It is, in a way, for the majority of the documentary, a sort of fetishisation of a high-life, seemingly without care or consequence. A disgustingly gluttonous display of excess. It is appealing.
