Drama Society presents ‘No Sex Please, We’re British’

Rosalie Falla reviews the first night of Drama Society's Week 5 Show. No Sex Please, We’re British by Anthony Marriot and Alistair Foot is a simply hilarious concept: when a newly-wed couple, Peter and Frances, receive a box of Scandinavian pornography in lieu of glassware, comedy ensues. Uninvited houseguests, a police investigation, a lost cheque, boxes and boxes of risqué material and many a mix-up make this a show worth seeing. Katie Dale’s and Niamh Dunne's directorial efforts succeed in bringing the British farce to the Jane Holloway stage in only five weeks, no mean feat considering the cast and crew balance intense rehearsals with their degrees- perfectly timed comedy is not an easy skill to master and yet Dale and Dunne's cast had the audience in fits. The New Boilerhouse Cafe

The latest development in Royal Holloway’s Estate Plan was unveiled last week, with the opening of the Boilerhouse Café. Situated just off the Boilerhouse Courtyard, it serves as a replacement to Café Jules which closed down during summer, in order to free up more academic space in the International Building. In keeping with its historical significance, there are renovated wooden beams and exposed brick walls which creates a very light and airy space. Its facilities include space for 30-40 people to sit inside - on comfy sofas or at study benches - and additional bench seating in the social space in the courtyard. Orbital's Georgia Beith reviews the first showing of 'A Night at the Theatre'. A tremendous night of music, dancing and above all fun, ‘A Night at the Theatre’ showcases the very best of what Royal Holloway’s creative arts societies have to offer. In the two part variety extravaganza there is quite literally something for everyone. From burlesque to Shakespeare, horror films to gospel and Tamil, the huge array of talent on display makes it a little hard to believe that most acts were put together in a matter of weeks. Man Restrained by Police outside SU

A man has allegedly been restrained by police and forced into a van after becoming aggressive towards SU staff at Tommy’s. The incident occurred at the burger bar at lunchtime. Details are unclear at the moment, but eyewitnesses suggest he was drunk and may have acted inappropriately towards female students and staff; prompting a complaint from one student. It was as the SU staff became involved that the man became aggressive. Grace Bilney complained to the SU after the man “made uncomfortable comments about girls on campus”, and claims she overhead him saying he worked at one of the construction sites on campus. “He said he was too drunk to work and so was ‘kicked off site’, so I assume he was working on one of the building sites at the uni.” Eyewitnesses say he then had tw...

CampusNet Goes Down After a Suspected Cyber Attack

Anyone that has been on campus today will most likely have noticed that the RHUL CampusNet wifi has been particularly temperamental, with certain web pages not loading, for instance, TurnItIn. Obviously this is a massive inconvenience, especially during the most chaotic week of term with many students having had deadlines earlier on in the day. But this isn’t an issue specific to RoHo and rather is affecting most universities across the country because the network – JANET – has been down following, what is suspected to be, a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) cyber attack. DDoS attacks work by created fake traffic to a webpage causing it to become overwhelmed, which in turn, slows it down and makes it inaccessible. Eyesore Building Developments Across Royal Holloway

Eyesore Building developments outside the Windsor Building and the famous Founder's Building are fully underway and taking away some of the beauty of the RHUL campus. The project, which has an expected completion date of September 2017, began this summer and now term has commenced, and students have assembled back to Egham, the changes across campus are not unnoticeable. One first year student, living on the East side of Founder’s building, comments that the close proximity of the site to student accommodation means there is less need for an alarm for those 9am lectures, stating “although the building grind is not unbearable, it can certainly act as an alternative wake-up call in the morning”.
