Man Restrained by Police outside SU

A man has allegedly been restrained by police and forced into a van after becoming aggressive towards SU staff at Tommy’s. The incident occurred at the burger bar at lunchtime. Details are unclear at the moment, but eyewitnesses suggest he was drunk and may have acted inappropriately towards female students and staff; prompting a complaint from one student. It was as the SU staff became involved that the man became aggressive. Grace Bilney complained to the SU after the man “made uncomfortable comments about girls on campus”, and claims she overhead him saying he worked at one of the construction sites on campus. “He said he was too drunk to work and so was ‘kicked off site’, so I assume he was working on one of the building sites at the uni.” Eyewitnesses say he then had tw...

Varsity is coming to Royal Holloway!

With the start of the new academic year, exciting news was announced at the SU on Monday 3rd. Over 1000 ‘bears’ attended the SU to hear the announcement from Steph Milne, the Co-President of Sports and Development, that a Varsity between Royal Holloway and the University of Surrey will be occurring on the 29th March 2017. A varsity match is defined as a sporting fixture between two university rivals. The first varsity was between Oxford and Cambridge University in 1827 – Royal Holloway’s inaugural participation means 2017 will be the year students here have the opportunity to join the tradition. After being announced at the SU, the official video was shared on Facebook the following morning – revealing the Varsity Teaser Video. The University of Surrey previously competed against ...

Tuition Fee Hikes announced by Universities before Commons Debate

A list of universities, including Royal Holloway, have announced increases in their tuition fees though a Parliamentary debate on the issue is still ongoing. Royal Holloway, Kent, and Durham universities have listed the cost for undergraduate students in 2017 will be £9,250, an almost 3% increase from the £9,000 cap imposed by the coalition government in 2012. The revelations come prematurely, with a debate on the exact direction of the tuition fee hikes still ongoing in Parliament. Royal Holloway have accordingly listed the increased tuition cost as being “subject to government confirmation”. This comes amid the introduction of new higher education legislation, which states that universities meeting a necessary standard of education will be allowed to increase their fees in line ...

Attack on University Internet Server JANET

On Tuesday 8 December 2015 the student population of Royal Holloway were sent into panic after what can be regarded as a collapse in the internet access across campus. The failure was as a result of what IT Info described to be a ‘malicious network attack’ against the university Internet Service Provider, JANET. Network Janet covers the ‘.ac.uk’ and ‘.gov.uk’ email addresses as well as the Wi-Fi service ‘eduroam’ which is used by most colleges and universities in the country. Royal Holloway was one of many institutes to have been affected - Manchester, Edinburgh, Sussex and Glasgow were also known to have had their servers disabled by the malicious hack. Despite sites such as Outlook, Moodle and Campus Connect remaining unaffected, it was the externally hosted sites, such as Turnitin...

‘Virginia Woolf once said that the world of her times was not ready for a female Faustus. Exhibition in commemoration of Royal Holloways suffrage history

The suffragette campaign swept through Britain in the late 18th century in demand for greater gender equality and the expansion of the political franchise to women. This year marks the release of the motion picture 'Suffragette', and a growing recognition for the campaign of rights for women. The ‘Suffrage at Royal Holloway’ exhibition in early October commemorated the inspiring campaign for women in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. This was featured in the Victorian Gallery one of the many historical gems of Royal Holloway, and a rather fitting location for the celebration given the era. Former alumna Emily Wilding Davidson, whose ideas of women’s rights were founded during her five terms at the university in 1892, featured in the exhibit and is particularly notable for her mi...
